It would make me hesitate to apply there. I would only apply there as a backup because I prefer to avoid locations that repeatedly have ranked among the worst places to live for various reasons (air quality, crime, poverty, etc). It really is sad, because Wayne State is a pretty good school from what I have heard.

tuition is really high for out of state also... 45k I believe. And they haven't traditionally accepted too many out of staters. Only since last year have they bumped up the number to 20% which is about 60 people

I'm one of them, although those three are better than Detroit in my opinion, in that it seems like it would be easier to commute into those areas from a suitable living area.

I don't hate Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis, or NYC. But hey, if you're cool with eating at Chiles or the Outback everytime you want to go out, fine, the suburbs are great. Plus, I've heard that going to the ciniplex is a blast and let's not forget the big mall.

Last time I checked (which would be last month when I was in Chicago to visit a couple of the museums), you didn't have to live in the city to have access to those "things to do there" that you mention. In fact living outside of a city allows you more money to go take advantage of all the positives while avoiding all the negatives (traffic, crime, exorbinant rent, etc).

I see your point, but at the same time, you have to remember that you're not talking to some 20 y/o typical premed who wants to party in his spare time and has trouble reasoning through anything with real world applicability, like....say a budget?

BTW, I can't tell you the last time I went to a mall or a ciniplex. And I've never eaten at a Chili's.

It's just annoying to live in a place where your Friday night options are something like dinner at Fridays and going to see Big Momma's House 4. What if I want to see a Peter Greenway or Mathew Barney film? What if I want to see Mersbow in concert? I don't want to have to settle or drive to the city everytime I want to see something. Crime is not an issue where I live. I take the train everywhere so I don't deal with traffic. Yes, you are absolutely correct concerning rent. For what I pay, I could rent a house in most towns. But I am not married, don't live with my SO, don't have kids, and am not a 20 yo pre-med. I have a budget, and with loans and a job, I make it work. Yes money is tight but I would not have it anyother way. It is very frusterating to hear phrases like "panties wet when someone says NYC or boston" or whatever you said. Its not that I live here because it wets my panties, its because other places dry them up. But you are right, suburbs and towns are super cheap - being single, you can live it up as a waiter.

OOS tuition is quite high, though they told us at the financial aid seminar that they consider you a resident after one year, unlike UMich.... and yeah, I didn't believe it at first when I heard it either.

Yeah, but not all people who opt to live in urban areas are kids. My sister is 36 and bought a condo in Chicago itself, not the suburbs, because it was closer to the stuff she wanted to be close, and no, we're not talking about bars and clubs. 🙂 My husband and I lived in an urban environment for 4 years, and we loved it just because we could walk everywhere and were surrounded by great restaurants.

yeah... I don't remember seeing it. I think that new addition to scott hall is supposed to update a lot of the facilities, but that won't be done for another two years. It seems like everyone studies in the small group rooms on the second floor in scott hall anyways
