second looks?

Is it common practice for applicants to take "second looks" at programs they like in order to demonstrate greater interest in them? Are applicants individually invited or can they simply make appointments? Finally, would this be a reasonable stand-in if one is unable to schedule an away elective at this program?

I don't know how common it is, but quite a few applicants did that this past year and we would pair them up with a resident to give an extended tour as well as to give feedback to the faculty if something glaringly positive or negative was elucidated.

I did a few but only because I needed more information in order to make my rank list. I think if there was a particular program that you're set on and you can go, it wouldn't hurt. The programs get a ton of info about you to make up their minds. Second looks are a way to get more of an inside look at a place. You'll be there for 3 or 4 years so it's worth it if you're not sure about a place. I personally wouldn't travel very far to get a second look. If you have to travel far try to spend half a day in the OR at a place the day before or after you interview instead.

I did only one, at the place I ranked number one. I'm glad I did, I sat in the PD's office for nearly an hour and we just talked. Very worth it in my opinion.

I also went on a few second looks. I think one particular second look made all the difference in the world. The chairman and PD must have taken notice since the coordinator told me they ranked me very highly. I ended up matching at the program!

I highly recommend it. It's a great opportunity to get to see the program during a normal day.... and to let the program director know why you would be a really good match for the program.
