Questions regarding second looks: how do these work? Do the programs invite you to come take a second look? Around when do they usually happen? Do the programs have set dates for second looks, as they do with interviews? What usually happens on a second look?

The only reason to do a second look is if trying to decide between two programs. Don't do it if you think it will show that you are interested and it won't get you ranked higher. Mostly it will just cost you more money.

Echoing Powderhound's question - What do you do on a second look beyond shadowing in the ED? Do you meet with the PD/Asst PD? Do you meet with residents or go out with them? Are they coordinated with other second-lookers?

EM isn't a really big 2nd look field in general. I don't know of any programs that invite applicants back for second looks.

There seems to be a misconception that second looks are organized by the Program. The Applicant is responsible for scheduling their second look and letting the Program know what they would like to do while they're there. If you'd like to shadow, talk to the PD, go out with some residents then you ask if that can be arranged or who to contact.
