Self-learning on application

How would one outline self-learning on your application? To have more control over my biostat research, I am teaching myself statistics from the mathematical proofs up. I also taught myself how to code in R and am writing the code myself. Would this count as a hobby? Go under research? Is it worth listing at all? Thanks!

Edit: For clarification, I'm exactly following the syllabuses of two 400 level stat/math classes to teach myself the stat.

Does this imply that all other learning has been non-self learning? All competent students should be self-learners.

Coding on a larger project or doing stat research are more valid things to put. But self-learning seems... obvious to me. Just my opinion, though.

All the other learning that I've done has been associated with a class. Before this, I've never independently taught myself two entire classes worth of material out of curiosity. I'm pretty proud of it actually, which is why I was wondering if I could/should list it.

Not worth a slot for itself, but you could mention it under the appropriate research activity.

If your letter writers are anything like mine, they will love being handed some examples/suggestions of what to talk about. Teaching yourself stats and coding is very above-and-beyond stuff, great point to have brought up in letter, imo.

I'd also just mention it under the research entry, rather than giving it an entry of its own.
