OK I am pretty sure that some of you may be tired of seeing me post in the forums:meanie:. But I have an issue. I am at a CC in Texas and I am most interested in applying to UIW in San Antonio. For the first time yesterday I saw what my CC's equivalence of UIW Pre-Pharmacy curriculum was and I still need to complete 9 courses (not including labs) before Fall '10. My advisor have been lazy in assisting me with getting the correct info and so I did some research my self. Now for this coming semester I will be taking:

Microbio with lab
History II or Philosophy (depending on what the counselor at UIW says)
Orgo I with Lab
Precal

*All this totaling 16 hours.

For the next semester I will be taking:

Literature
Orgo II with lab
Calculus
Physics (cal-based)
Elem. Statistics

I will also be taking a fine Arts course in the summer.

Question: Do you think this is doable? Or am I in over my head?:scared:

PS. I tried searching and did not find any useful info regarding Pre-Pharm

The first semester doesn't look terrible. The second semester looks tougher. Could you switch the fine arts class with one of the math or science classes? Whether or not you are in over your head depends on you. I strongly suggest not getting behind and studying a bit every night. If you start to get backed up in that second semester, it will be tough to catch up.

That is a possibility but I have heard so many horror stories about taking Math/Science courses in the summer. I am a little adamant about doing that but why in sam's hell do we need to take a fine arts class for a health care profession

to become more open-minded?

well, physics doesn't seem like a logical pre-req either 😕

You should be fine. The semester workload is actually pretty average. It sucks....but you can do it

If anything, if you can pull it off, it'll increase your chances for acceptance. You have to keep in mind that pharmacy school is 20-25 credit hours a semester, and one of the qualities that admin like to look at is ability to handle and succeed with a heavy course load.

On a side note and if you don't mind me asking, why are you interested in the of the few private schools in Texas? UT, UH, TAMU, and Tech are all a hell of a lot cheaper and judging by your stats I'd say you would have a decent shot at all of them.

I loved taking a couple of science classes in the summer. Last summer, it was Gen Chem 2 followed by A&P 2. I really liked the fast pace and that I only had to concentrate on one subject at a time. I liked it so much that when I started the fall semester, it seemed like everything moved in slow motion.

Good point. Oh...I am not only interested in just UIW. I will be applying to UH and UT as well. I am more focused on UIW because I have a life and family here and it would be very inconvenient to move unless it is absolutely necessary. If you don't mind me asking, what Pharm school do u attend?

Really? It never really appealed to me. I know for a fact that I will have to take at least one class next summer and for right now I think I am going to take one of the posters advice and do Statistics in the summer.

I attend Texas Tech

Not only that, the courses get harder in pharm school. So this turns out to be a good test for you. If you can't handle this year at CC, then you basically can't hack it in the PharmD program.

Thanks. I think I will be ok. I have devised a plan and worked everything out so it should be manageable.😎

I would have moved stats to the Summer. stats is cake but it's a beotch having two math plus two science-especially if you get an evil professor for physics or ochem.

That's exactly what I did instead. I am doing Fine Arts and Stats in Summer I. It should work out pretty well. I don't know what I was drinking when I was thinking about doing a Calculus, Stats and Cal-based Physics in the same semester along with Orgo II.

Yea, that would be too much for me also. I took bio+gchem+calc+stats+labs in one semester. chem and bio were no prob, but calc was murderous and stats, though not too hard, took up a good amount of time. Physics w/ calc, orgo ii and calc I were my hardest classes. G-luck taking those togther👍

Dang...Now you making me worry. Man, as long as I pass them, I am not even gonna sweat it.

First semester looks easy. Second looks like a beast. Calculus is really tough... I took calculus, organic chem II, organic lab, and english and I thought that semester was tough... yours looks worse!

I had a friend who took it at a CC also and he said it wasn't too bad so maybe it's doable. You should be able to get a feel for what your in for the first few weeks of class when you are still able to drop them.

Good luck!

It sounds like a lot. I want to start Pharmacy school by next fall so either way i will not be dropping any classes. I will have to ride it out. If anything I will work less and focus more on school.

Would it be possible to move literature to the first semester? It would seem to be hassle to do it while you're taking so many math/science courses.

Ok, this is what I decided to do:

Fall
Microbio
Orgo I w/ lab
Pre-Calculus
Philosophy

Spring
Orgo II w/ lab
Calculus
Calc-based Physics
Literature

Summer I
Fine Arts
Stats

I think it is doable now.

that looks a lot reasonable to me. Just stay focus and you'll be fine. Remember, our advice don't mean anything - you're still the driver and I know you will be just fine!!!

Lookin' good man. I like calc + calc-physics at the same time.

Isn't calculus a prerequisite for calc-based physics? That new schedule looks better but the only problem (besides being a relatively harder semester) is that you will be applying concepts in physics from calculus that you may not have already learned yet!

Get to studying on that calc on your break in between semesters!

I can take calc-based physics and calculus concurrently.

Thank you. I think I will be ok as long as I remain focused. I don't have any distractions at the moment and none in the foreseeable future.

No, I meant that you might be using stuff in physics that you haven't learned in calculus yet (for example, using higher order derivatives to solve problems for space/velocity/acceleration problems). Just a thought! It's sometimes a problem at our university when a student takes both the same semester.

Good luck! as long as you don't get caught up in like world of warcraft or something... that thing claims lives!

Don't get me all worried now lol. I guess if that is the case then it has its benefits because it would help in calculus if I already know those concepts. Probably won't help with the Physics though.

I will try not to. I will need to buckle down because I don't wanna wait another year to apply so I want to do all these classes once and do them right.

If you're pretty good at math, the physics will actually help you understand calc. Calc can be pretty abstract if you don't understand the relationships between functions and their derivatives (and later, integrals) but physics will really show that to you. It's a great way to learn calc.

I think I am ok when it comes to Math. Functions sometimes confuse me, especially when you have to graph. What is the big difference between Pre-Calc and Calc?

I thought we have to pass calc before taking calc-based physics.

Btw, I took 2 science classes (physics and microbiology) this summer and last summer I took Calc, Stats, Gen Chem 2, they all ended up very good grades. I think they like summer science classes now 🙂.

What is the big difference between Pre-Calc and Calc?

Pre-Calc is just algebra like an extended version of college algebra. Calc is a whole other mess. I got A's in both but pre-calc sure didn't set me up for the holy shiet storm that was calc.

At my school they let you take it concurrently. There really was only basic calc in my calc based physics class.

Well thanks for letting me know that it will be hard. I hate math to some degree but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Calc is still algebra, just with new operands to deal with.

Do you really need to take pre-Calc? If you've taken a trig course (high school), you should be fine to walk into Calculus I. Our Cal II teacher used to (semi-seriously) joke that you could learn trig in 4 hours. And if it's been a while, brushing up isn't too difficult.

I know it's probably too late now (I somehow missed this thread), but I think you'd be at an advantage skipping pre-Calc and going straight into Calc.

When I took Philosophy, we had to write a lot of papers...you should take a peek at the syllabus. If there is a lot of writing, I suggest PHI in the summer and the fine art in the fall...Just a thought.

hey man...

you should look into the CCs around your area to see if any of them offer the "Intersession" during the winter. I don't know about schools in TX, but here in CA, they will offer classes during jan-feb going at 2x speed. But hey, if you can pump out 1 or 2 courses during that break in between fall and spring, it will help with the work load and scheduling conflicts you might run into

just a suggestion...

I am already doing my pre-pharmacy coursework at a CC. I have never heard of that course. I wanted to take Ethics as the Philosophy course but they did not offer it online or as a telecourse so I had to do Intro. to Phil instead.

Here we have accelerated courses in the Fall and Spring. You also have the "Maymester" to knock out a course or two.

Those I know about. I was thinking of doing a flex course but I doubt I could handle that with my schedule.....In other news, I am going to quit my job because they are just not willing to work with my school schedule at all. I am ****ing p***ed. But, school comes first so I gotta do what I gotta do.
