I have just gained acceptance at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and I am extremely excited. However, I am scared to death about taking the boards after my second year. How hard is it? If you don't pass, then what? Sorry, I am a little bit of a worry wort but I would really appreciate any responses. Thanks in advance---- have a safe and Merry Christmas!!!!!

I'm in the same class as you are.

From what I hear, unless you want to get 90+ score, you just have to memorize the deck for a couple of weeks then you will pass.

If you don't pass the first time, you can retake it.

Thanks man! I really should be more excited about gaining acceptance to dental school instead of worry about something that will not need addressing until im a sophmore! Sorry, thats just my nature!! Have a Great Christmas!!!

At my school, very few people have actually failed the boards. I know one guy who did not study AT ALL, took it cold and got a 78.

IMHO, with the current NBDE part one format, if you study a reasonable amount you can probably expect a low to mid 80's score.

The students who got 90+ scores put about 300-400 hours of study into preparing for the test. 😱

I don't think that they made the test harder to pass, I think they just made it harder to get a high score.

yeah from what i've been told, and take this with a grain of salt...as was said earlier...it seems like it's just been made harder to get a REALLY high score. It's pretty much just a way of separating those who want to specialize from those who dont...almost like the way a solid DAT score can make up for an average-low GPA...almost

You will learn most of the stuff you need to know on part I during 1st and 2nd years in dental school. My school gave students two weeks to study and most of us did fine. If you really want to score high then you should plan to spend more time preparing for it. So for now, just enjoy the pre-dental school life. Dental school can be stressful but it is worth it at the end. 🙂

stop worrying about things that are 2 years away. you will be prepared when the time comes. right now the only concern you should have is relaxing before school starts (or finishing up undergrad, if you're still in school)

National Boards are being scored differentlt the past year of so... The average score is the same as before.... curved...
the individual exam scores are more a raw score...
based on this you may hear it is harder.... it isnt... just reported differently.

most schools do a good job getting you ready... I know faculty at both NYU and Louisville... in fact many at Louisville were my students many moons ago.

those decks... will help... they did not have them in the dark ages when i took the exam... but then we didnt have paper back then<g>

to practice, all you did to do is pass... 75....

apply for advanced programs, they may look at the boards to compare you to other students, since each school grades differently.

you all have started on a good profession,,,, good luck

its much easier than the exams you'll take for your classes thats for sure. there are dental decks and previous exams you can study from. also if you thought the DAT was hard, you will soon realize that every final you'll take for each class in dental school will be much harder than the DAT.

Well i feel if you have had all the basic science courses in undergrad D-school is just review as far as the science go(genetics, biochem, physiology)
