Has anyone ever attended a St George University open house? If so, would you say it was worth it to attend? The closest one to me is in NY...but I've never attended because it's always held late...this one is from 7pm-8:30pm and I'm not sure if I can get any of my friends or family to tag along..I'm kind of hesitant to go into the city alone...Also transportation would be by train & cab...so not sure how easy it is to catch a cab at night?

I've been to one and was impressed. I went more out of obligation to my pre-vet club with virtually no interest in the school, and I'm now applying to SGU.

I don't know anything about the one in New York, but their vet-school admissions director is a great guy. He may be willing to do a session more convenient to you if you have enough people who are interested.

He hangs out on here as Jeff SGU.

Good luck!

I'll go to the NYC open house. PM me the info
I haven't heard anything about the open house and I already applied there. Weird.

Catching cabs in the city is easy as pie- as long as it isn't after ten, in the financial district, and/ or raining.

Since I doubt any of those will happen- if it's at a hotel, the doorman will grab you one. Also, they're easier to find in front of restaurants, big venues, concerts, and places rich people hang out. Or, if you want to save 40 bucks, the subway isn't that bad- stories your parents told you about when they went to the city in the 70's and early 80's are not true now. You can study the map online to see where you need get on/ off/ transfer. Though if you get on the wrong train and are headed to the bronx at 2 am, get off with everyone else, turn around, and get on a train going back where you came from. But that's just common sense.

Otherwise, it's not as scary as it's made out to be. Or else I have an under developed sense of danger:laugh:.

It's in Times Square!!! I think I'll have to do a little shopping before!!🙂 Thank you lazyjayn for all of your tips & advice...very helpful. Guess I was just hesitant to go because I've never gone into the city alone 😀 Usually the bums harass me even when I'm in groups....so I wondered what would happen if I were alone?!!

Just act like you know where you're going, don't look up, and pretend you don't see the panhandlers. Sounds harsh, but it works.

Basically, act like you belong, not like a visitor or tourist. It works for other things in life too, trust me.

Wow! Parietal, thanks for the compliment. I have been working for St. George's for over five years now, and I honestly enjoy meeting with the future vet students as they are always nice and down to earth, and have a strong passion in them. This is by far the best job I have ever had. Just because there are limited seats in U.S. vet schools, I think it is important for all prospective students to check into all options, and learn about the different schools out there. At the open House presentations we usually give a 20-30 minute long power point presentation about the programs, Island, and campus, then open the floor to questions. We usually have graduates there as well who share their stories, which is better than anything I can probably tell you. We have a ton of grads around NY so there will definitely be some at the NY Open House.

Unfortunately I will not be at the NY Open House as I will be at graduate school fairs at Alfred, Geneseo, Brockport and R.I.T all next week. So it will probably be the Dean of Admissions giving the presentation in NY.

I am attaching a link to all of our upcoming Open House presentations for anyone that is interested. There is also a link to RSVP for them on this page:

Also, I visit universities and speak to Pre-vet clubs, so if you would like me to visit your school, e-mail me at [email protected], and we can work out a date.

Thanks for that post Jeff. Because of that, I'll probably be attending the meeting in Nova Scotia 🙂
