Hey guys- is it expected for us to stay after the interview day ends and observe/shadow in the ED? I've heard different things. If a program doesn't offer, does that mean they don't care? Sometimes this will mean I have to stay an extra day in the city because of flight issues.

It's not expected, but if you really like a program you should probably work a shift to see how things go and kind of get to know a few people. But if you don't want to do it, don't.

I spent at least a half shift in every ED I interviewed with - these were far more useful than the interviews. I highly recommend it for every applicant.

The flip side is that it gives you more time to accidentally say something stupid, do something awkward, be unable to answer a pimping question, etc and ruin your chances at a place in a single moment.

With that said, as was discussed above, on the interview, you don't get a sense of how the ED runs rather than just seeing a tour of it. I wished I would have done more shadowing because there was a lot of places where I was like "huh" when trying to remember if I'd like working there
