Hello,

I will be shadowing a neurosurgeon next week. Any pointers for me before I get there?

You don't need greenberg if you are only shadowing.
Are you pre-med, or med student? If you are a pre-med, just show up, be interested, and don't be a nuisance if you go to the OR.
If you are doing a rotation, I'd review your neuroanatomy from 2nd year.

From a fellow premed:
1) Be polite. To everyone. Just because a surgeon says something mean to a nurse doesnt mean you can.
2) On the first day at least, show up in slacks and a dress shirt. You will might change into scrubs right away. Follow his lead in what to wear.
3) In the OR, dont touch anything, espically not anything sterile.
4) Follow HIPPA
5) As long as you are polite and intelligent, feel free to ask questions, but not during difficult parts of the case/emergencies.

If you don't know what's sterile, and what's not - ask before you touch anything. Generally, if it's covered in a blue (sometimes green) drape, it is sterile and should not be touched by people who are not scrubbed in and wearing sterile gloves. But ask first, in any case.

Yes, but in general, dont touch anything at all. Maybe a nurse will ask you to hand her a bag of saline or lactated ringer's, or tape or something, but unless asked, do not touch anything at all. If you want to see someone really angry, accidentally force him to rescrub, or to postpone the case to get new instruments

just stand there like your not even in the room! lol, nah just be reserve and listen to what everyone else says, neurosurgery... im not really sure if youll dress up for that (most neuro procedures are very long and strenuous) maybe your doc will let you come in the middle of it and leave after an hour or 2,youll probably be around a lot of docs, nurses and techs during neuro procedures so just try not to get in their ways🙂, but youll probably get to see a lot of clinic
