Hi everyone, I have 2 questions, can someone please suggest some of your shadowing/volunteer experiences

1) What kinds of questions did you ask optometrists when you were shadowing with them?
2) Did you learned anything interesting or unique when you were volunteering with that specific optometrist? I know for most, we learned to perform all the preliminary testings.
2) How can you shadow in a hospital settings? I thought optometrist doesn't work in hospital settings, only ophthalmologists?

Thank you!

Ask them what you want to know! For both optometrists that I shadowed when we first met and that was when they expected me to ask questions. I just asked things I wanted to know like what did you do right after you graduated-I didn't have a long list of Qs. Just ask what you want to know, I'm sure you have questions! You'll find that there's also alot they want to say to you as a pre-opto.

I shadowed an optometrist at a commercial place and they didn't really teach me to do any of the prelim stuff there, I just observed and did menial tasks. Then again, I wasn't there for long.

I shadowed another at his own private practice and they're now teaching me everything I can be tought

Agreed with the above. Ask them particulars that you want to know. Especially ask questions about stuff that you can't learn in school. As cool as it is to learn to use a phoropter, tonometer, etc. you will be having LOTS of hours using those in school. Ask them about insurance handling or about other business stuff. Find out more about commercial and private practices themselves so you have an idea what you want to get into. Depending on the optometrist, they may answer all of your questions and show you how to work all of the equipment, or they may do nothing. It really depends on who you shadow.

just ask about the types of equipment they are using.
i observed her performing an eye exam and she told me step by step what equipment she was using and why she used it.

then i asked her what she did after graduating and any study tips for optometry school
