I am a High school Sr from Florida and i am extremely interested in the medical field, specifically the surgical field. I want to know how to get in contact with doctors and see how they interact with patients.

If you know any doctors (even your own doctor), you can ask them. You can also contact the volunteer office of a hospital to ask about shadowing, or you can find doctors online who interest you and call their offices. Also, if students at your high school have shadowed before, you can talk with them or your teachers to get in contact with those doctors.

OK thannk you so much for replying! Do you think that they would be allowed to let me see operations? or does this violate some rule about patient privacy?

It depends on the institution and whether or not the patient allows it, so you should ask about that when you contact doctors. It's pretty common though to shadow during operations.

It depends. Most surgeons, and doctors in general will not allow you to shadow them but you just need to contact as many as possible. I shadowed an anesthesiologist and saw a few cool surgeries. Where in Florida are you?

I live close to Marion County so I am pretty central to everything. Could you tell me about a little of what you were able to do when you shadowed?

I shadowed in Tampa. I didn’t really “do” anything. I met with the anesthesiologist first thing in the morning followed him around as he prepared for 3 or 4 cases. Then he just kind of took me into some OR cases that he thought would be cool for me to see. I saw a hernia repair, leg amputation, and a craniotomy. Sometimes there was no talking allowed, and other times the surgeon or a CRNA would walk me through what they were doing.

This was at Florida Hospital in Tampa. A friend of mine told me about this program where they let any pre-health student shadow an anesthesiologist for a day. If you’re not too far I can give you the woman’s email

I would greatly appreciate that thank you’re very much

If you end up cold emailing, tailor each message to their clinical interests and attach a resume.

I have difficulty seeing you getting shadowing opportunities from strangers while in high school, though. Might have to wait till undergrad.

That’s kind of annoying since you would see if you like the job first. I see your point though I’m going to try to ask my doctor

Dude you'll have plenty of time in undergrad to shadow and decide that. It's not much more than 6 months away, either.

May I ask what you decided to do when you were dong your shadowing?

So if you can get someone to let you shadow, its fine to do for interest's sake but realize you won't be able to count it as medical experience/shadowing on your medical school application until undergrad.
