I have recently found an OB/Gyn that will let me shadow him. How should i go about the whole shadowing process? Can anyone give some steps that i can use throughout the process to make it most benificial? Thanks

It depends on what sort of environment the guy works in. If he has a private practice, you probably won't be able to get close to him interacting with patients (a OB/Gyn patient is probably uncomfortable enough during an exam, a pre-med gawking in the background probably wouldn't help). If he works in a hospital, see if he'll let you go on rounds with him. You could also just get a few meaningul conversations out of him about his experiences, etc.

Oh, good job! You must be excited, judging by your posting name 🙂

Anyway, make sure he knows you're really interested in it and ask him at the beginning if he'll sort of explain things as he goes along. Also, try to schedule different days of the week to shadow. I've found that doctors seem to do the same types of things on the same days. If you spend different days with him, you'll get to see more of what he does. Try to see surgery if you can!

Also, out of courtesy to the patients, you might want to face the other way for some stuff. When I shadowed a colorectal surgeon, I always turned around when he did the rectal exams. It seemed like the nice thing to do, lol.

That reminds me of one time I was assisting a doctor doing a pap (not that he needed assistance, they just have to have another female in the room). I was awkwardly trying to look useful and not gawk and he goes "Hey [HelenaP], have you ever seen a cervix before?" When I admitted that I had not, he made me come over between the poor woman's legs and inspect her cervix with him. It was a special moment.
