Does anybody have any tips on how to get shadowing experience/write to OD's for shadowing? I normally shadow an optometrist near school, but I'm at home for the summer in northern California and am looking to gain more shadowing experience.

I'd welcome any tips and suggestions! Thanks in advance 🙂

I looked up local optometrists on google and called them to set up a shadowing appointment. Out of the six places I called, I ended up going into three, so call a lot of places. Good luck! [I know phone calls are a pain, but it's worth it, trust me! 🙂 ]

when you call do you just tell the receptionists to pass on the msg or speak to the doctor themselves?

I just said I wanted to make an appointment to shadow the doctor, and sometimes they had the doctor call me back, and sometimes they just set it up themselves. They usually have a procedure set up for how to handle students who want to shadow.

My dentist actually gave me the name and number of his friend/optometrist and I called them up and asked if I could drop off a resume. I wrote a letter about me and what I want to achieve with this shadowing opportunity and dropped it off while reiterating verbally to the receptionist what I wanted to do. Then they called me back and it was great!

I didn't get any luck actually calling or going to optometrist offices. My first in was writing optometry schools and asking if they had any contact info of alumni who might let me shadow. After that it's sort of a domino effect.

all I did was call them and all but one said I can come
they usually will be fine with it if you call them and just ask nicely and professionally

I usually just walk in to the office and ask the secretary if it's okay to shadow the doc, then she/he usually calls them out. We meet and talk and so far, they've all been okay with it.
