I am shadowing emergency medicine doctor during this summer semester and I am wondering how many hours per week is appropriate. I want to get a really good experience and learn a lot. I am taking classes but they are not too bad.

Thank you!

Sorry to not have an answer for you, but I'm interested in doing the same thing. Any tips on going about asking an ER doctor? Did you know your person beforehand?

well does anyone have any shadowing experience? how many hours do people usually do per week?

I just got the shadowing through a special class offered at my school.

To get a true experience, why don't you spend a week shadowing every hour the Doc does?

The hours can really vary. Just ask the doctor what days/hours would work the best for him.

One of my shadowing experiences was just 4 hours a week (every Wednesday afternoon) for five or six weeks. Another one was just a couple of days, but I got there super earlier and tagged along ALL day long (like 10 hours).

Really, the quality is much more important than the quantity. A highly educational and enlightening 5 hours can be worth more than 30 hours of not-enlightening stuff. Also, shadowing a single doc or a single specialty really has diminishing returns after a bit.
