Okay, this may sound like a dumd question, but I was taught that "No questionis a dumb question" by my 1st year chem prof, so here it goes...

When you have an interview with a panel, do you shake each of their hands before and aftre the interview?

I did when I had my panel interview; however, my interviewers got up from the table both before and after the interview for introductions and goodbyes, so that made it easier to decide. 😀

I don't think it will make much of a difference. If you're so worried, shake hand before and after. Shaking hands has never hurt anyone...except when...ahh, you don't need to hear that story.

Ok, I'm resisting every sarcastic urge I have and it's taking a lot of willpower, but here goes:

Start of interview: "Hi Dr. X, I'm Bob McNervous." (shake hands, exchange, "good to meet-you's," etc. MAKE EYE CONTACT.

End of interview: Get up, shake hands, make eye contact again, say "thank you, Dr. X." Leave. Jump up, click your heels together and yell, "nailed it!"

On second thought, omit that last part. That's about it.

Absolutely shake hands.
But you will learn that in fact, contrary to what your chem prof suggested, in life there are many dumb questions. Try not to ask them during the interview.

Weird story... In my last interview when I first met my interviewer I put my hand out there for my interviewer to shake and he didn't want to shake my hand, it felt horrrrrrrrrible. Even though he said something about how he had a cold or something, it didn't make it feel any better. I just didn't feel welcome and comfortable during the whole interview. I waived him good bye, I'll let you guys know if I got in or not.

I interviewed with a woman who had a degenerative disease in her hands and had wrist braces on. When I walked in I introduced myself, but did not make the effort to shake her hand out of respect for her condition. At the end of the interview I made a similar gesture. This was awkward for me because it was a decision I made on a whim, but honestly I feel like she may have turned down the hand shake probably if I had offered it.

Other than this scenario I have shaken hands and kissed feet and... and...

I never really got into the double-pump mentality, and was always taught to gently cup the other's genitals and administer a double-squeeze. That way they've got something to look forward to should they accept you.

don't feel confined to social norms by limiting your options to a mere handshake! nay, consider other options so that you can make an indelible mark on your interviewer(s)...

1. a deep, from-the-waist, bow, like dirk diggler did at the porn awards in Boogie Nights

2. a fist-bump - nothing says "peace, dawg" quite like a fist bump. just beware that you may go in for the single straight-ahead bump, but they may be thinking up-down-forward, 3-part, bump

3. chest bump - can you imagine anything else cutting the tension in a room than this? especially if you have to vault yourself over a desk!

4. elbow bump - like the Bash Brothers in the '80s, though they may think you're on 'roids

5. just electric slide your way out of the room. they'll be so mesmerized that they'll forget that you didn't bother to shake their hand

6. double kisses on the cheek - not sure about medicine, but that's how they do it in the paper business (wink, wink)

You are all forgetting the two most important handshakes. First the dead fish. Lay your cold hand out infront and when they shake, do no use the thumb...just leave it tucked against your palm. This will make them feel like they are eating your hand with their hand.

Also, the two handed power grip works well, espically if you are a female shaking hands with a male and want to let them know that you're the boss. Give a long hand shake with the right and use the left to grab thier upper forearm, just below the elbow. Firm grip. Also hang on for just a second or two longer than is generally considered appropiate, that way they know that you are a hard worker willing to go the extra yard.

Feinberg also has 3 on 3, although mine had four interviewees due to the number of students interviewing that day.

I shook hands both before and after, but they stood up first and extended their hands, so it was pretty obvious what was expected. Don't worry too much about it -- just follow their lead.

Go in for the handshake, then quickly adjust to the thumb-wrestling formation. Then challenge him to a best out of three. Note though that it may be in your best interest to let him win. If all else fails, a rousing game of patty-cake should secure your acceptance...
