So we've had threads about just about everything clothing/acessory related. Is it okay to wear loafers to an interview? I have a pair of black floorsheims that are sooo comfortable. I mean, if I'm going to be doing miles of walking on a tour I think getting them polished should be enough. Is it really going to make a difference to blow like $300 on a nice pair of oxfords? And do brown shoes go with a navy suit? How about olive green? Yikes!

Do you need to go buy an expensive pair of shoes to go on the interview? No. Is it disappointing to see that people have gotten so casual and lazy that they'll look for every avenue possible to dress down even for a medical school interview? Yes.

One should by all means treat medical school interviews as professionally as possible. Are loafers fine? I suppose so. But I think 22 is a ripe enough age to walk down to a mall and purchase a pair of $50-60 dress shoes. They aren't that hard to find. Besides, we all have funerals to go to at some point. 😕 (bad taste?)

agree...difference b/w $60-80 pair and $300 is small. And make sure to buy shoe trees (those wood things than you put in shoes when you're not wearing them). They make a HUGE difference in the way the shoes will look a year or two from now.

ugh...LOAFERS?!?! Are you insane?

Go down to the mall and get some Keneth Cole shoes (which I think are crap but thats because I am a shoe *****) - they are only 50-60$ and look much better than ugly ass loafers.

Professionalism is very important when interviewing.

I don't wear Keneth Cole, I think Keneth Cole is like the Wal-Mart version of good footwear. *smacks diesel for insulting his taste*

One of the worst questions I have ever read on here.

Not Walmart but it is a over-hyped brand named. Any brand that does more than one thing (i.e., shoes, jackets, watched, etc...) is not for me. Dexters are a good shoe if anyone cares. Can find them in outlet places for little mula and quality.

If loafers are absolutely out how about boots then? Honestly, I don't understand why it seems you guys think there have to be laces on shoes for an interview. Aren't dress shoes dress shoes, regardless of the style?

aren't loafers disgusting, regardless of the color? IMHO, loafers should not be a part of anyone's wardrobe.

Okay, I'll clarify

The first pair is fine, the others are ugly.

Coincidentally, my acceptance of the year has come from the interview where the airline lost my luggage, forcing me to wear the not too formal outfit i'd worn on the flight over (it was fashionable just not professional - tan shirt, black tie, khakis, and brown slip-on shoes)

so i can be a bit of a fashion snob.
with that said, i believe that shoes on a man is SO important. as my father always says, you can tell a man by his shoes. i don't think this is a stupid question, i think it's very relavent. you want to be put together and professional, bad shoes can ruin your suit.
skoaner- i would go for either the top two shoes.

the boots (the bottom ones) are terrible. the shoes in the middle aren't formal enough in my opinion...they are just regular black shoes that you could wear out on a friday night. the top pair (the loafers) look like something a grandfather would wear. they are all hideous. go get a nice pair of shoes with some laces. nordstrom usually has great shoes.

Okay, for all of the loafer snipers -the first show is a loafer! Maybe you were traumatized with memories of ugly penny loafers at your confirmation. So the verdict is that loafers are alright?

the first pair is strikingly similar to all other ugly penny loafers i have ever seen - there is just no slot for a penny.

The first pair at least have a semi-square toe. I still wouldn't be caught dead wearing them but at least there aren't any tassles.

To answer this, let me just repeat what I said because I feel like it isn't getting through:

You're a ****ing adult now! Get a nice pair of dress shoes! If you already have a nice suit, tie, shirt, etc., then get the shoes that go with it! After weddings and funerals, medical school interviews are right up there in terms of obligations that you should dress as well as possible for! They only cost like $60 bucks! +pissed+ 😡

You should wear nice shoes, but don't get carried away. Chances are, your interviewer will never even look at them. And if a pair of shoes makes or breaks your chances at a certain school, you probably don't want to go there anyway. As long as you look professional, the substance matters more.

haha...
when i interviewed at dartmouth, the first thing my interviewer said was "oh, i love your shoes!" they were from ann taylor and had these 2.5 inch skinny heels. so you never know!

Unless of course you have a very very narrow or very very wide foot. My bf has a men's AA foot (equivalent to a women's 4A in narrowness). His only choice is those $300-400 Allen Edmonds lol.

And to the people talking about KC's at $50-60 rather than $120 being knockoffs, they aren't...they are just his Reaction line most likely.

To the OP - you can definitely go with a nice dress loafer like the pic shown, but it wouldn't hurt to get a pair of nice oxfords...not casual ones like shown in the pics. Boots are fine too but I agree that the one shown is pretty ugly 😛 .

what's with everyone arguing over shoes? after all these years of hearing that guys never look at shoes, i'm surprised that it's become such a big deal. even if you're shoes are "ugly," i doubt that the interview will base his/her judgement of you on the attractiveness of your shoes. i think you're only concern should be that you look clean and polished.

I want to hear you say that you are going with the loafers and the sock color of choice will be white. Seriously though...as long as your shoes don't attract attention, it probably doesn't matter...I wore shoes similar to the plain middle shoes for my interview. I found that because I was talking they tended to look at my face. If your interviewer is so bored with a response that they start looking at your feet...it might be a sign that you need to move on...

Interviewers do notice shoes. Ask your schools career counselor - it's something nearly every "how to interview" book stresses.

This thread gives me a headache. I never knew that pre-meds were also shoe ****** to the n-th degree. If you guys can afford to buy $300 shoes while in undergrad, you should be sending me money to help pay my tuition!

I don't think any undergrad was talking about actually buying $300 shoes...the OP asked if it was necessary, but I think every reply has said that it isn't. My bf, who is forced to buy the $300 shoes (and has been forced to either buy the $300 shoes since becoming an adult, or stuffing a ton of extra insoles into non-$300 shoes just to make them sort of fit) is not an undergrad. He also doesn't actually pay that much for them when he gets them once a year or every other year since he works in the store he orders them from 😉

it's called capitalism. if you want something different, go to cuba.

loafers are definitely fine with a suit, provided that the leather is the shiny, stiff kind. the 2nd and 3rd pics you posted are not formal enough, but the 1st pair of loafers look good to me. just make sure that the loafers have a leather sole, and not the chunky rubber kind. it's an archaic rule, that you have wear oxfords with formal wear (which, btw, is fallacious, because monk straps are considered to be even more formal).

This forum needs more gay men. Coz we can dress🙂 I love it, I love it, I love it - the fact that I'll be out there knowing the difference between Collezioni, Emporio and Exchange...Ultimately though, it's what is in the brains - not the dress that counts...

Ok, here's what I went with but it wing tipped not plain toed. My new shoes They were on sale so no, I didn't pay $285 for them! 👍 ?

Skoaner and Sitra - Both are perfect for interviews (or any dressy occasion). Good job guys 🙂.

You guys crack me up! Fermata - love the stilts.

Another update about my shoe purchase.. I interviewed at CWRU last week and was complimented on how sharp my shoes looked, and then she poked fun at some of the other candidates joking how their shoes looked brand new 😛 (I wore them for a couple of days beforehand to break them in a bit).
