I am thinking about staying in Short Hills, NJ for my New Jersey interview. It's 8.5 miles away from Newark, NJ. Is Short Hills a safer place? Any kind of public transportation from there to Newark? How is Elizabeth town? Is Elizabeth worse than Newark? How about Weehawken, NJ and Jersey City, NJ? Thanks so much in advance.

Short hills safer than Newark, if by safe you mean home to the most overpriced mall in North Jersey and million dollar homes then by all means yes, it is safer than newark. There should be some form of NJ transit bus and/or train that goes to penn station (newark) from where you can hop in a cab to UMDNJ, like a 5 min ride. Check out www.njtransit.com and you'll be able to see the stops/ times. I live about 5 towns over from short hills and it takes about an hour 1/2 by bus (vs 20 mins by car) so a train might be your best bet to get into newark.
Elizabeth and jersey city are equally as far if you take commute times in consideration, just mapquest it and see for yourself.

yes, i agree w/ makwendo. Short Hills, NJ is one of the affluent areas of new jersey w/ an expensive mall. best bet is to rent a car or if your hotel is near the NJtransit stop, take the train (morristown or gladstone lines) heading east (toward NYC Penn station) into Newark Broad St station and take a taxi from there. i think it's about a 0.5 mile from UMDNJ to Newark broad st station (and vice versa), and NJTransit trains take you directly into NYC Penn station if you plan to travel to Manhattan.

* Just a note, there are 2 penn stations, one in Newark and one in NYC, so don't get confused. And NJtransit lines that travel through Short Hills stop at the Newark Broad St. station (which is in downtown Newark).

Elizabeth, NJ is less ghetto-ish than Newark, but closer to Newark Liberty International airport. And there is a NJtransit train stop at Elizabeth that takes you to Newark Penn station (downtown Newark). From there, you would take a taxi to UMDNJ.

Believe it or not, sometimes it's more affordable to stay in a more affluent area. $45 for Hyatt in Indianapolis but $81 for a motel. Can you believe that?

The only thing I know about Short Hills is that mall 😍

Nevertheless, just suck it up and stay in Newark. You're only going to be there for a few days anyway, and I dont think you're planning on wandering around by yourself at night,so it shouldnt be an issue-the last thing you want to start worrying about is [public] transportation in an area youre unfamiliar with.

stay in short hills, the directions are real easy from there and if you can take a car b/c if you take a train you will end up in a different part of Newark, but if you take a bus(which is annoying cuz lot of times they arent on time) it iwll take you very close by to where you want to go
