Hi all,

I applied to and was accepted to UMKC last week. Because they start in January, gave me only a few days to commit to attending. They're a really wonderful school, but I have other schools I applied to that I like just as much. My top choice sent me an interview invitation a little while ago and I was really looking forward to interviewing with them. They have a low post-II acceptance rate, but I am so thrilled to even have a shot. I also interviewed as an OOS applicant at an state school (with strong in-state bias) and really liked their program (minus the steep OOS tuition).

If I decide to go to UMKC, I have to give my two weeks notice at work, drop everything, and move in under a month. In this process, I will throw my dance school, dance students, and coworkers under the bus, as well as be forced to break my lease. My family is under a lot of pressure as it is (they all have COVID...), and I'm concerned about causing even more stress with this.

I also have a current acceptance to Goro-approved DO school, which I am very grateful for. I also have an interview scheduled with another Goro-approved DO school next week. I haven't heard back from 15 of my other schools and have no rejections at the moment. I'm a decent ORM non-trad applicant (LM 71 with post-bacc GPA>3.9 + MCAT>515, solid but quirky ECs by virtue of being a nontrad). Is it irrational to decline because I want to hold out for other schools? Or am I being ridiculous by not taking this acceptance and running with it?

Do you have any recommendations or additional considerations for how to handle this situation?
Thank you so much for all that you do.

Questions bolded because I know you're busy and I need to work being more parsimonious with my words.
As you already have an acceptance, and going to UK would cause you a lot of emotional distress, it's Ok to dump UK.

How do they get off with starting in January?????

Thanks, Goro. That validation is really helpful. They're an amazing school, definitely have their strengths, and they were one of the first schools I really liked. It's just so hard to drop everything at this point and give up on everyone else, ya know?

They're a combination BA/MD program, and the MD-only program was started to help fill seats left open by BA/MD students who dropped out. They also are expanding their MD-only program though.
This is a tough situation and I am not sure what I would do either. I would say UMKC over the DO schools...but then you don't wanna miss out on those other MDs you are interested in. You really need to weigh your risk tolerance and how much you want these other schools. How happy would you be if you declined UMKC and then only got DO acceptances?

I did end up declining their offer. It was really difficult, and now I'm terrified if it was the right move, but relocating in under a month just didn't feel very feasible right now right now. Am still grateful for both acceptances, and am excited about shooting my shot at my dream school. Hoping that more interviews come through, though. Is there still time for that?

Thank you both for your kind and honest advice!
People are still getting interviews. Go for gold!

Getting accepted to the 4 year MD at UMKC is tough, they don't accept a lot. But given your circumstances and the requirements to move so suddenly, that makes it very difficult over all to hold out.

Hopefully you get some more MD acceptances at this point however if not you will be able to make the DO school work..if it's the one I am thinking about.
