Hi everyone,

I hold a BS degree and have taken classes afterwards to finish my pre-req. I'm still taking Orgo II right now and will take Physic II next semester (in a special 6 weeks "winter" semester, finishing by Feb). I haven't taken my DAT yet, altho I hope to take it before Jan 2006. I really want to apply for the entering class of Fall 2006, but do you think it's too late? Should I hold off until next year? If I apply this year and don't get in, would I be judge harsher if I re-apply next year? Please help!! Thank you.

How does 2006 sound? I don't think you'll find anyone who will tell you otherwise. Many schools deadlines are before January anyways.

Way too late.

The competition to get into dental school is much more intense then you propably think(Or you wouldn't consider applying this year).

Study your ass off for the DAT and try for next year.

you're pretty much out of the running at this point. study for the DAT, and be prepared for the next round of applications (it's coming faster than you think). you'll have a better chance being an early applicant next year. 🙂

unfortunately, even if you apply today, schools probably won't even start reviewing your application till feb or so. unless you have stellar stats and extracurrics, i would say it's too late for this cycle.

I'm in the exact same situation that you are. Will be taking my DATs end of December. I even completed most of my application on AADSAS. - Did not submit. In August, I was still planning on applying this year to just the schools that have really late deadlines (like USC March 1). But after speaking to so many others that have been through the process, I realize that I'll just be wasting my time and my money.

You're better off going on AADSAS and starting an application this year so that you can print it all out and know exactly what will be needed when the end of May rolls around. As soon as the applications are available, you will be able to be one of the first applicants to submit. This way, you have a much higher chance to get into the schools that you want to go to.

Best of luck on your decision. I know it can be difficult to have to wait another year to start Dental School.

I would apply because you have a shot at many private and public schools that have just started interviewing. If your stats are good and you rape the DAT, you have very very good chance becasue last year my freind applied in 6 schools around end of november and got into 3 of them but he had an awsome stats.

i'll offer a glimmer of hope for the late applicants out there...

my friend took his DATs mid-december last year and was accepted to Temple, Maryland and NYU by february with a 3.1 GPA and 19 AA. so it is definitely not too late!

(granted, he was a biomedical engineer from johns hopkins with several publications)

god some of the advices given are *****ic.... oh yeah, it's because they're all predents, and pre-dents by definition are douchebags. It is late, but is it necessarily too late? only at some schools. I applied in Jan last year, and snagged a couple of interviews...

so call the schools you goign to apply to, see which ones are still reviewing/interviewing, and then get it in ASAP and hope for the best.

Thank you all for your advice! I think I'll start my application on AADSAS and if my DAT goes well, I'll submit it to schools that are still interviewing......if not, I'll be an early applicant next year.

I've never worked solely in a dental setting (although I do work in a medical setting)....is work in dental offices very important? Or just medical field in general is okay?

I worked as the Coordinator of the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program and the ID clinics, and a Research Assistant of the ID dept. Although I do work with patients, the most "hands-on" experience I have is helping with blood-draws.

if you have no dental specific experience that's a huge strike against your overall application. be prepared to get drilled on it at an interview.

Theres a reason the deadlines are set. Some are not until January, if your going to apply for this upcoming fall, do it now. Only apply to schools you think you have a shot at, dont wast alot of money on AADSAS!

If you have no dental experience, then it's VERY unlikely that you'll even score an interview. You have to have demonstrated at least some interest in dentistry.
