So there is two of us on rotation and my preceptor generally only make eye contact with the other student about 80-90% of the time. This occur literally the 4th complete sentence I had with the preceptor after I meet the preceptor and when the other student came in. I know they sort of know similar people and are more or so familiar with same people but I feel i'm being ignored and this sucks...

The said student is in no way better than me in anyway, if any the other way around so I'm just pissed off lol or annoyed

Preceptor is a male and the other student is a female?

I would just let it go; you don't want to get on the preceptor's bad side over something trivial.

Especially as if it's as Z said, a male preceptor and hot female student (or male preceptor and hot male student?).

Just say, hey my eyes are over here, OK?!

I had an attending tell me a couple of months back that if he starts staring at my chest too much just to tell him to look up. I lol'd at him.

The other student is better at pretending to look attentive and interested. The eyes naturally go towards the person who cares about what is being said.

hey there, I'm a P1 at NSU. :hello:

Just bring it up to your school's experiential rotation director if you feel your preceptor is distracted from teaching and if it is impacting your learning experience. Otherwise, just be happy you are not in the spotlight, and carry on...

I honestly don't think any good can come by complaining about this to anyone at all! At least if the issue remains as is. There comes a point you have to suck it up in life and realize whining is going to do more harm than good. Figure out which battles are worth fighting, and which aren't.

Realistically, what do you expect the outcome to be when the preceptor hears of your complaints? Get what you can out of the experience, realize the preceptor may be turd, and move on....

Don't bring it up. (but if you do, at least videotape it for SDN entertainment purposes 😉 )
As long as your preceptor is otherwise treating you fair, who cares who looks like. Probably not the case here, but some cultures consider it rude to make direct eye contact, especially with the opposite gender.

damn you all and your cartoon avatars, i keep thinking spiri is replying to everything

I feel like I am the only one who didn't understand a word the OP said...

No, both are females. The student is moderately attractive to me at least but i mean but shes not like something i never seen before and the preceptor is married. I look attentive all the time and interested and want to learn (i really do, i'm not faking it...)

I'm hoping to do really well on this presentation next week so may be things will change? I mean there are just times I feel like i'm being freaking ignored and its annoying but i feel like she is getting a little bit better at looking at me now. I haven't shaved in 3 days and she looked at me more today but she was kind of pimping me though but still lol.

No the preceptor is really good, she knows her stuff and is very well respected in her field and i was really hoping a letter of recomm before the rotation started lol but she just wouldn't look at me fml

You're just an ugly dude and if you posted a pic of yourself I think we'd all understand why your preceptor doesn't look at you.

Maybe the preceptor is sexist and is favoring the female student.

Everyone has annoying rotation experiences. Just keep reminding yourself it's only x amount of weeks, power through it and move on.

Yeah. How old are you?

beauty is in the eye of beholder, and i don't consider myself ugly, quite the opposite at least a 6 - 6.5

i'm in my mid 20s so is the other student

The original post was beautifully written. The preceptor probably doesn't look at him because he is in awe of his mastery of english grammar.

I think you are being sarcastic. lol

Jesus Tapdancing Christ. Threads like this make me want to quit precepting completely if my % of eye contact is being monitored.

Yes, if you get a student that looks like a 6-6.5 and fails a writing exam. Make sure you always look at him but not at his crotch or anything like that or we'd get another thread here.

I don't care about looks. But damn it is frustrating to work with students who have poor communication skills. I had one (who was hot BTW) who tried and was earnest and all but had to revise his notes and recs a minimum of 3 times bc they were unintelligible. I didn't sign up for precepting to teach remedial communication to doctoral students. Ugh.

I've been pretty lucky I must say, but there have definitely been things that I assigned to students that would have taken 1/4 the time had I just done it myself in the first place. That's what people don't realize about precepting. That's where the huge time commitment comes into play.

Let's talk a minute about typos. I cannot get over the typos in materials that are presented for grade. Guys, guys, really. Proofread, for the love. Is the importance of that not taught anymore?

Typos are annoying! Especially when I see them in a professor's slides or a preceptor's instructions...that and the incorrect use of than/then, their/there, should of/should have, etc. I hate misspellings too! Once someone spelled mnemonic as pneumonic. I think students and faculty/preceptors alike should use proper grammar and proofread! In fact, I don't mind proofreading for people at all. I think it's important to have a few people proofread your materials.

Ok, back to the wine (or whine?) 😉
