Hi I am upcoming third year dental student with Navy HPSP. I start to think about doing specialty. I just want to get some general opinions and information on what is my next step if I want to apply for a specialty in the Navy or a dental school. what is the pros and cons to do a specialty in the Navy vs. at a school.
And if I decided not to do a specialty, do I start working at the Navy right away or is it better to do some post grad program first?

any input would be appreciated! Thank you!

If you can do residency straight out of dental school; go for it.

If you don't then you work as GP and you can apply specialty anytime you decide. But there are a lot of factors and it may or may not work out in your favor...lots of variables

Look at the Navy specialty board results. You will see you can apply direct to OS, Pros, Perio...

OS is best bet, ortho/pedo/endo no chance...others depends

If you have stellar grades/board scores etc your chances are very good depending on what specialty you choose....

it all depends on the needs of the Navy...they are always hurting for OS hence best chance...

You don't have a lot of say in the matter - you need to be authorized specifically to go to an outservice residency. If you apply to one and get accepted without the Navy's permission, they won't let you go.

This is a very very very important point

I knew a guy year ahead of us in dental school. He decided he would apply to OS on his own without asking the air force. Guess what? He got in from what i remember....they told him sorry you can't go

Oh boy he got a lawyer etc etc.....he was pretty depressed for the rest of the year....unfortunately back in early 2000's they weren't very lenient on rules. He ended up doing GP in air force was a very bitter officer

Always work with the military don't try to make your own rules you will get burned most likely
