I have to register classes this weekend, and don't know whether I should take human physiology instead of general botany?

Thing is, human phys does not count towards the bio major, but its still 4 credits with lab and is listed under bio department. And I hear its an easy class too, because of the teachers tests etc.

botany is required for the major, physiology is not. Plus I will have to take animal physiology some time too as its required.

So should I take phys, which would set me a back a bit in course sequence (though I'd get an A for sure boosting my gpa, looking good to med schools), or take botany? (which I'm supposed too by course sequence)

Heres my schedule as of now:

Organic Chemistry 1 with lab (oh god...)
Botany with lab
Pre-calculus
Intro to anthropology
Social problems

thanks for all your help🙂

How the hell is physio not included in bio? I included it and AMCAS ok'ed it so if you're just lookin for bio credit I'd do it cuz it sounds like a hefty amount of credits, plus it will help for MCAT.

See, this is why 4.0 from NO NAME schools (not in the US NEWs top 50) should be frowned upon...

sigh..NO. The prof gives study guides that are almost identical to the actual exam, plus he's a good prof. And I'm not short of science credits (bio major), its just for the grade, and coincidently its a good class for mcat etc...

Eternal rage: phys is listed under bio, but does not count towards the bio major. Animal phys is required, so I think thats why human phys is not required.

(btw bruinboy my university is in the top 50, so take that lol)

You def should take it. Mine was not part of the bio major either, but it helped alot with MCAT / grad work. I have also heard that it is a nice basis to have for medical school classes. Plus, if it really is easy, pad the GPA

Frowned upon? The MCAT is the great equalizer. How did you do? =]

thanks for your advice nickel. Do you think the fact that taking it will put me behind a little in the core bio sequence is a big factor? should I be real concerned?

IS the class for non-Science majors or what?

Well the class would satisfy the gen ed requirement for non science majors, so to an extent yes. I've seen the class text book, full fledged phys...

I'm going to have a word with the prof real soon, so it'll answer some of my other questions.

Human physiology will clearly be more helpful than botany for the MCAT & beyond.

In my school Human Anatomy & Physiology is a pre-nursing & pre-PT class &, therefore, does not count towards a BIO major. It is, however, part of peoples BMCP.

Yea I took an engineering physiology and even that was counted by AMCAS in BCPM.

I took a human physiology class and it was one of the best moves I have ever made. I am a non-science major and physio is the reason I was scoring 11s and 12s on AAMC practice MCAT exams (although on the real thing I got a 10, I think I must have just missed an 11, but oh well). For some reason, the MCAT can sometimes hit physio hard and the more you have of it, the better off you will be.

Is this physiology class upper level (the class I took was upper level)?

Like big-name schools don't have classes with easy/hard reputations.

I would say DEFINITELY take it. It can help so much on the BS of MCAT... As a physio major, the only reservation I would ever have on recommending it to someone who doesn't need it in their program is if it would put a bad strain on them academically, but this doesn't appear to be the case w/ you.

As for delaying your core bio sequence, it's as simple as loosely plotting the rest of your core classes out through the rest of undergrad and seeing if taking it is feasible, and/or if it won't put you in a bad position later. If you can take it, do it.

There human anatomy and human phys. are in the kinesiology dept at Rice...biologists think those classes are not worthy of being considered bio classes...so instead they are placed under humanities (?...yeah I know...stupid!!!)

take it. its a M1 required class, and has potential to be looked at as a possible indicator of success on the boards. I enjoyed physio when I had taken it.

What a jackass thing to say...You actually believe that because someone takes his/her undergrad at some school that's not so prestigious they should be counted out as becoming doctors? There are people who exhibit the attitude you are replying to who come from top schools too jackass not just so called "lower tier" undergrad institutions. Plus, maybe some didn't have the highest high school grades to get into these top 50 schools but are now more serious about medical school. Do you think that only those who got the top grades in high school and got into the top colleges have the privilege to become a doctor? You're just ignorant.

Physio is about 50% of the MCAT bio section... nuff said.

if anything, Id think that lower tier colleges have more to prove, and thus, establish a reputation for themselves as an academically rigorous school, while top schools (no names mentioned), have already been stigmatized with grade inflation to maintain school prestige and high averages upon graduation.

lol no, honestly, what you need to know in human physiology is way more than what you need to know for the MCAT. I see human genetics to be "more" important class you need to know to help for the MCATs, than you do in physio, and even then, a standard bio prereq is still more than you will need to know for the MCATs. One class that stood out to me, that helped me breeze through 2 passages without even reading much, is immunology. But different strokes for different folks. Anyway, irregardless, all you need for the MCAT is a MCAT Review book, that is it. The other classes are just helpful to get into medical school, and if your memory is amazing, to perhaps help in your M1 year and boards.

I thought they cut out some genetics in previous years. But not sure what the new MCAT looks like so maybe youre right and physio may not be covered as extensively.

having taken the August 04 MCAT, I'd say that physiology > genetics, if you have to choose. I might recommend analytical or biochem before genetics, but it depends on how much you had in intro biology. I've learned so much about DNA and proteins it's not even funny.

take physio. you'll probably like it, and if it's an easy class, it won't be a huge time loss. it won't necessarily be useful on the MCAT though.

and yea, i know it'll hold you back in the completion of your major and graduation but if you have time to kill, why not take something interesting? that and having gotten your feet wet, you'll do better in MSI physio.
