Never heard of it...

Isn't that a frat?

I think it's worth enough to buy you some soup. Just not from an adcom.

Sigma Xi is a pretty prestigious research society...you'd have to contribute a lot to research to become a member and that's only after your PI nominates you.

I'm in it... it's a research society, not a frat. I had to be nominated and was inducted after 3 years of research. I had to pay $20 annual membership dues, and I get newsletters and info about conferences and stuff. I put it on AMCAS, but have no idea how it was perceived.

how did you get your PI to nominate you? Did you just ask him or is it more diplomatic than that? What happens afterwards

I dont think you can ask your PI for it....and I dont remember paying a fee for induction, but I could be wrong....the perks of it is you get a year's subscription to American Scientist.

I did not ask about it. My college had a chapter, and they chose students every year to nominate. I was nominated because I had been doing research for 3 years and was writing a thesis, and my PI/advisor thought I had potential for a career in research. 🙂

I forgot about the American Scientist thing... I keep meaning to read the issues that come in the mail (but now my year is up -- oops).

Associate membership (being nominated as a student) isn't really important. It gives you a leg-up on getting Grants-in-Aid for your research (about $500 - $1000) since they give preference to current members, and it pads your CV, but not much more.

Full membership on the other hand is really an important honor, but you have to be a PI with significant research to get that.

My advisor actually sent out an email asking us if we wanted to be nominated. Of course if you wanted to be nominated you must have significant research background.

Cobra Xi is much more prestigious. there is no pain in this dojo.

You're thinking of Sigma Chi.

True, true.

I had a couple of friends get it. They had a big ceremony and banquet at my school. Didn't think it was huger than Phi Beta Kappa, but then again, I did mistake it for Sigma Chi, so...yeah... 😳

It's all good. I'd never heard of it. Chalk it up to my hatred of research in college 🙂
