How many other single mother medical students are there? How do you plan to make it financially?

I am a single mom, and I start in August. I live close to my parents, so they can help with my daughter. Unfortunately, they live in an area where rent is not cheap, but this will be easiest on my kid, and she won't have to attend Cracktown Elementary School. I'm taking out a LOT of student loans -- stafford, gradplus, and private loans. Hopefully some others can sound off, bcs I could use some advice as well.

What medical school are you attending? I will be attending Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB). My daughter and I will be living in an area that I have to send her to a private Christian school. B/c I am relocating, my closest support system is 2 hours away.

I am not sure where to go for private loans. Do you have any idea?

I’m going to OSU-COM. Our school provides us with a list of preferred lenders, and I just went ahead and used T.H.E. as the lender for all my loans, including private. I think the max you can borrow from them, cumulatively, is $250,000, and I’ll probably hit that max (I have some undergrad debt as well), but you gotta do what you gotta do. The federal and gradplus loans that were budgeted out for me by the school definitely did not seem like enough, even though I don’t exactly plan on living extravagantly. Have you talked with your financial aid coordinator at your school yet? They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Single MOM's: what is your biggest worry about beginning medical school?

Obviously one of mine is financial. However I also worry about how I will get enough studing in. Is anyone else worried about your children suffering b/c of the demands medical school places on you?
