Thinking about how I talked to an IPPE participant today. He told me that he was thinking about pursuing medicine after completing pharmacy school...

Mind you...I have a few beers in me right now and the screen is a bit blurry; however I can still spell and use semi-colons properly.

He wanted to get paid what docs got paid. He wanted to experience the glory of being a "doc." He talked to a "doc" that has a Porsche and races it. This honestly kind of worries me...a health care profession...for the money? Wow, it sounds like many in my P1 class (sadly). What happened to helping people? What happened to making that old lady smile when you sad hi to her? Cheesy? Oh wait...I thought retail sucked. Maybe I just like people? I don't care...I like old ladies. They bake great cookies and want to hear your stories...even if they suck. Ginger snaps.

So...I came home and did some research within this forum...the whole forum. Let me tell you Pharm.D. pursuants (word?): we're fine. They fight with insurance companies as often as we do; their reimbursement is falling, and there are quite a few of them leaving practice. Their salaries aren't climbing, and they work quite a few more hours than we do (double in some cases).

Ahh...but I hear some of the whiners chiding out there. "1. There is a glut approaching. 2. CVS and/or Walgreen's have me by the scrotum and I'm going to let them own me. 3. I have student loan repayments to satisfy."

1. Start your own or separate yourself somehow
2. Find a new job even if it means relocating or doing something...creative, risky, or daring
3. Suck it up, join the military for 3-4 years and stop "crying like a" biznitch

Folks, please stop saying "we can take our profession back." Just do it. I'm going to try. The grass is not always greener (another cliche I love).

For those among you who are creative, create and/or start providing SERVICES. We don't just have to sell drugs to live. I'm not necessarily talking about MTM.

You know all of that bizness you learned in school? Couple it with a little creativity and think of something people might want. Perhaps an innovative ointment, chapstick, or some other product. Write a book. Form a collaborative practice agreement. Start an independent like DoctorM!

Whatever you do: please, please stop whining. It's depressing, annoying, and worst of all, pathetic. If you hate CVS or Walgreen's so much, just quit. Work at a hotel, or a gas station, or Wendy's or something. Leave the profession, go become a teacher, just shutup or something.

All right, time to go to bed. My eyes are hazy and I can spell and write surprisingly well when I'm buzzed.

P.S. If you want to complain a little more...go ahead and do so somewhere else, and then watch this music video.

Cheerio and goodnight.

Of course! It makes so much sense now! Everything will be okay with our profession as long as we all get drunk! Thank you, jinga!

I totally agree with you. This forum is really depressing because everyone just whines the whole day. Every single new graduate is currently struggling to find a job not just pharmacists.

He should do the math and see that many doctors make the same or less per hour than a pharmacist. If he really is in it for the money, he should pick up a few more shifts a month as opposed to going to school for 4 more years.

depends on the doctor. many are not good business people. however if you got a good mindset you can make great money in medicine.

be a specialist. you will make SIGNIFICANTLY more than a pharmacist.

also, places repay your loans, pay for conferences, provide you with live CME each week and food, you get to make a greater impact on people's lives, you have more options, you are more hands on, you do work more but working a few more hours a day to bring you to 55 a week isnt bad and is worth it.

medicine is a great field. although reimbursements are declining you gotta remember that you can GENERATE income. also if yuo can get into a specialty doing cosmetics, people will always pay out of pocket for their cosmetic junk. the same way people will buy their beer and smokes each week but complain about the dollar copay on the medicine.

medicine is a HUGE committment though. you can fail any way along the way and then you are out. you will be working 30 hours straight every 3-5 days throughout residency on top of publishing, reading every night, etc.

those guys driving porsche have been in medicine during the golden years where they could just bank money and what you said went.

now it is team approach to care of patients, gov involved in your practice, hospital administration telling you how to practice. Evidence based medicine telling you that you MUST use these 2 antibiotics vs those 2 antibiotics for this condition even though they cover the same pathogens because when you go to ICU with pneumonia you have to have these 2 so hospital gets reimbursed correctly.

there is a lot of BS like that behind the scenes though. everyone wants to call you for something asap. if you are in primary care you will struggle. if you in another area you can be happy but those areas are ultra competitive.

I'd work at Wendy's if they gave me free hamburgers since they make the best fast food hamburger.

By the time you finish pharmacy school AND medical school, you'll have so much debt that you'll never be rich. Racing Porsches... ridiculous.

yeah i would rather race NSX..

ahh the grilled goodness...fresh never frozen beef patties....ummmm, ummmm ummmm....

You're weird. No one I know thinks Wendy's has the best burger. I love their Frosty... and I dip fries in it.. but their burger is not the best. I would say What-A-Burger is better... and BK flame broiled is much better than both. I actually prefer one of those little White Castle burgers over Wendy's.

But I promise you...you'll like In-n-Out.... but of course you won't ever admit it even after you try it.

I also think Five Guys Burger is ok... but pricey.

You may have to prove it. My closest friend makes "Gary" burgers. They are mini meat loaves.... They would be hard to beat. I wouldn't count you out mind you, but very tough competition....

I'm up to the challenge! But I make all kinds, so would have to know your tastes first. Anything from a double cheddar with caramelized vidalia onions...black & blue cajun burger...or just a timeless classic with a really thick patty (these taste very similar to a 5 Guys burger actually). Oh! And I bake fresh hamburger buns too. Take your pick! 😉

Here's a throw down... I started to work on this piece about 10 years ago then gave up. About 2 years ago, I picked it up again...now I got it. I think you should learn it... it sounds good on both classical and electric guitar.... not so much on regular acoustic guitar. One key...you gotta get your fingernails right. If you need the music let me know.

wow, they don't even have tabs for that. i guess i'll take the music; i'll pm you my email. does this piece involve using the pinky on the right hand (can't tell in the video)? if so this might be good for me since i usually only use four fingers on my finger picking hand.

Recuerdo de la alhambra is one of the most famous "tremelo" technique pieces.

It's a rapid "p, a, m, i" plucking from the beginning to the end. And the rapid tremelo is what's hard about it...not the notes.

To answer your question...no pinky.

I've never had In and Out. They mentioned it in The Big Lebowski and Donnie was very excited by it. And if some dudes who erroneously demolished the wrong guy's Corvette still take the time to get some in and out, it must be good stuff.

Five Guys IS bloody awesome, though.

I ate at an In and Out when I was visiting my sister in California. They only have about 10 menu items, and I understand they pay their employees quite well, as fast food goes, and offer benefits, although I'm not sure how many hours you have to work to get them.

When I was in pre-pharmacy, there was a guy in my biology class who said he wanted to be a pharmacist because he wanted a Porsche by the time he was 30. :whoa: He switched his major to business because he big time flunked general chemistry I.

You should have went to medical school.

From a longterm perspective though, both careers are going into the gutter. This is primarily because of the ever increasing American underclass. When nearly 50% of the country are not paying any federal income taxes and still get an equal vote, then you've got a sustainability problem as a society.

As this underclass becomes an increasingly vocal majority, you bet legislation will be written to ensure that their needs are served. Any career with a "public service" element will be drafted for this purpose; health care and education being the big two. Look at any third world country and you will see that teachers and health care providers get paid diddly squat, even though the demand for them are incredibly high (which in a free market would dictate higher wages). In China for instance, the ratio of physicians to population is 1:1000 (it's 1:50 in the US), yet Chinese physicians make a mere 20% more than unskilled factory workers in China. Meanwhile, Chinese real estate brokers make 100x the salary as Chinese physicians. It's much easier for politicians to sacrifice a few poor saps with limited political influence (physicians) and talk about physician "ethics and duty" to appease the poor majority than to actually make the poor wealthy and close the inequality gap.

In a banana republic, the only jobs that are safe are ones that cater exclusively to the wealthy (like financial consultants) and luxury brand sales.

This is possibly the most idiotic thing I've ever read on this forum.

WTF. You have any specific points that you want to challenge?

Political expediency makes careers in health care very susceptible to downward pressure on wages. It might not be a problem when the country is wealthy with a vibrant middle class who can pay their own way, but once the middle class tax base shrinks, good luck. My state in Illinois has cut hundreds of Medicaid programs because of its perpetual budget crisis, ranging from drug rehabs to early intervention for autistic children. At some point the consequences of the cuts will become visible on the street, and then what? The money is still not there. The overall macroeconomic health of America in the next half century will have a very large influence on careers in health care, they're certainly not immune to it, and are likely to face far more political pressure than just about any other white collar career.
