Applications are under review finally. UW, Duke, CaseWest.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to update you, UW is now reviewing my app :xf: I only have 1 recommendation in, my second one got sent in today.

Good luck! :luck:

Each SMDEP site makes its admissions decisions on a "first come, first served" basis, therefore applying as early as possible increases your chance of being selected at your designated program site(s).

I went to Columbia last year for Dent, and it was the BEST experience of my life. If you get into Columbia, DEFINITELY go there. Getting paid to live in NYC was amazing and everyone there was extremely helpful and supportive. They told us once we got there that there were over 1000 people apply for the 80 spots, so it is definitely competitive, but it is worth it. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I don't get on here much, but hopefully I'll respond!

Well, the lady I've been bugging the hell out of said everything was in and would be considered for the Feb 1st deadline. So hope for the best I guess... She couldn't say why they weren't under review.

Nice man sounds awesome. What was your daily schedule like?

And do you feel like going to Columbia for SMDEP will help you in the future?

Yeah Duke isn't reviewing mine either🙁 I hope they aren't full yet and review ours soon!

The daily schedule was one thing that I did NOT care for at Columbia (not sure how the other sites ran things...) because classes and seminars were never at the same time or in the same building as the previous session. Fridays were reserved mostly for dental lab and medical clinicals. You get put into two classes (orgo, bio, anat, or physics) and everyone takes histology, cdir (career something information something), and als (accelerated learning seminar). I would say that i had to be at class by like 10 most days, then usually get one or two hours for lunch, and then the afternoon was usually booked until 5 or six. Some days I would get the afternoon off as well, it all depends on what classes you are in.

Do I think it will help me? Definitely!!! The amount of motivation I had when I was left was simply amazing. I don't know if you've experienced "burn out" or not as a pre-med student, but it really sucks. After the program, you'll feel invigorated and ready to take on the world. They honestly make you realize that you CAN realize your dreams and that you have what it takes to do so. If you're interesting in going to Columbia for Medical/Dental school after college this will definitely help you! We talked to the deans of admissions, and we got to know the leaders in the diversity program very well. Dr. Klyvert and Dr. Mitchell were in charge of the dental component and they encouraged us to email/stay in touch with them as we continue our education. They even offered to write letters of recommendation for us. I'm not sure if you've taken orgo yet or not, but after taking orgo at Columbia I was WAY ahead of the game compared to other students at my school. Honestly my advice, if you get into Columbia, go there!

The one drawback is that Columbia medical is in washington heights which isn't exactly the "coolest" place, but the subway station is 2 minutes from the dorms, and it takes another 20-30 to get downtown manhattan, and you get used to hopping the subway all the time.

anyone ever been to Louisville site?

I applied there and that's where i wanna go.

Wow thanks for the description Maxillo, definitely hope I get in there haha. Just wondering but how much was the stipend at Columbia? And what do you mean by getting to pick 2 classes? Can uyou only choose 2 out of the four?

louisville hasn't begun reviewing my application. maybe that's a good thing because i'd rather go to columbia or case western (my first two choices).

I just wanna get in somewhere. But about how this thread has almost 12,000 views-----
does that mean 12,000 applicants?! :scared:

i don't understand why one of my recommendation shows now. he faxed like a week ago...

I just checked my status for my 3 schools and yesterday they all said that I was in review and now it says "not yet processed"...does anyone know what this means?

Sooo, my app was completed on 1/7/10 BUT i was still missing a LOR so my teacher had to resend it. They finally got it today. Do you think they will even read it anymore since the due date passed? :help:

There is probably not a butt load of apps being sent in since the due date for he first batch has passed. SO i am guessing things kinda settled down and now they have time to process things faster.

of course they will, at least you submitted the app before Feb 1st the cutoff date for giving out decisions on Feb 15th. It all depends on when you submitted your application.

hmm ok. but now they JUST made me re-certify my app and now it says this:

Your application was submitted on 02/09/2011 09:33 PM
Your application was completed on 01/07/2011 10:06 AM
😕

It was originally submitted in december! ugh i am hoping this does not change anything. but thanks for the help.

I think that's what counts, well hopefully in your case, good luck

The program actually picked the two that you would be in based on your transcripts. In other words, if you took biology, but did poorly in it, they might put you in the biology section. If you did really well in chem, they'd put you in organic chem. If you've done organic chem, did well and didn't take physics, they'd put you in physics and anatomy, etc etc. Some students were upset about the placement, but believe me, the program directors know what they're doing. They know if you need help in an area or if you're "ready to move on."

In regards to the stipend.... I honestly don't remember... last year they had all the stipend info online but I couldn't seem to find it this year... Maybe the money things changed from last year? I sort of remember it being 600 with another 100 for travel, though that could be way wrong. The more I think about it, the more that sounds right though.

Hey! These were the three I applied for last year! I got into Columbia and Case and not Louisville (go figure...).

At around this time last year, national HQ said they were receiving about 300 faxes A DAY so if it doesn't show up right away, that's probably why.

ahh Louisville seems like it's harder to get into, and i wanna go there ;/ lol
and why do you say that?

Fairly confident Columbia is the most competitive program site, with (well) over 1000 applicants for 80 spots.

So my app was submitted on the 25 and processed by 2/8/11. I called and the lady said as long as everything was postmarked before 2/1/11 I was still in the first batch so I'm guessing you should be fine. Are any of the sites full yet? Does anyone know?

hey all, I did SMDEP at UW in 2008, so if you have any questions please ask away or PM me (hopefully it hasn't changed too much since then). It's a really wonderful program and helped me immensely in getting in to medical school. Good luck to everyone waiting for a decision! :luck:

Well Columbia reviewed my app a few days ago. we don't know for sure that it is full just because someone wrote it. Guess we'll find out on the 15th!

True but he said he called them and that's what they said. but idk

😀 thanks fashionrebel! I heard Columbia is full (which i am not surprised of) but i would imagine that they could switch and change their minds too so you never know!

I did call them and that's what the woman on the phone said. I do hope they change their minds and switch spots for the ideal applicant. I am a "she" btw. 🙂

So I called Yale and they said they are closed. She said last year the cut off was 600 applicants before their site was closed, and they only accept 80... 5 days to go.

I'm loving the SMDEP love on this forum. I applied to Yale, Case, and Howard. I Submitted 1/28/11 and they received my transcripts 2/08/11. Yale and Case are currently reviewing. I hope I get into the Yale program. DO IT.
