How's everyone holding up? One of the major regional hospitals lost power (Jefferson Regional) and they were on generator power almost until the shutdown point.

It took me 2 freaking hours to dig my car out this morning. 2 hours!

It's nutso out here in the PA/MD/WV/VA quadstate area. The county North of me went from "State of Emergency" to "Declaration of Disaster"..😱 A trailer in my trailer park had its roof collapse.

Civilization is crumbling around me.

I am doing fine. It is kinda warm here in Cali. I am worried though since there is a small chance of rain this week.

I always wanted to live on an island!

****ing bull**** hype over here in NYC/Long Island, everyone was running around like it was going to be a snowpocalypse and of course we barely get an inch, I was done cleaning my car in under 1 minute. I actually wanted it to snow a lot so I could take my car down to this abandoned parking lot and just drift in the snow. 😀

hmmm you really do live in a trailer. I always thought that was a joke or something like that.

WNY is a major disappointment too. I mean, everyone knows that Buffalo is supposed to get pounded with snow, but the roads are dryer than they are in July.

And what about Vancouver? They're actually shipping snow to them for the Olympics? How lame.

I'm pretty disappointed to tell you truth. Been here five years and the most snow we've had was during a freak storm in October. All it's been doing is snowing just enough that you have to clean your car every time you get in...but not enough to get any real good skiing. Very disappointing.

Nope, I go to St. John Fisher in Rochester, which is only an hour away. I grew up in Buffalo though, and I was visiting my family over the weekend.

That storm was so brutal though haha. I mean, we lost power for a few days/weeks depending on your location, not to mention something like 30% of the trees were knocked down.

Haha I looked at the snowfall totals today and I was like WTF...this is snowmaggedon????

In the midwest here, we have had days of 19 inches of snowfall and 15 inches of snowfall this winter. And countless days of 3-6 inches.

But I do find it funny that where I used to live (west OR) people freak out at an inch of wet snow.

If winter would end sometime soon here...that would be great. I've got some riding to do. 👍

I guess....enjoy "Snowmageddon?"

Midwest flat. Area hit by storm not flat. Drive up a mountain with even 3 inches of snow and tell me how you do. A mountain with a 3" sheet of ice...the things of disasters...

*stabstabstabstabstab*

Come spend a weekend down in "ski country" (Springville, Ellicotville, etc.) We get plenty of snow every winter. As a rule of thumb, Springville generally gets 2-3 times whatever Buffalo gets. There are usually well over a dozen days every winter where from Hamburg up there is no snow, and down near my hometown is getting bitchslapped by snow.

The one time in history when everywhere in Erie County except ski country got nailed. Usually it's the other way around. I distinctly remember, I cut my lawn and bagged leaves with my tractor that day. Then there was a light rain in the afternoon.

Babies...in New England we get snow like that in the middle of March, then it's 85 degrees the next day

expected like 6-12 inches up here in central jersey, but we didnt get that much at all. its ok, second chances! theres another storm thats gonna hit tues/wed and ive been hearing 12 inches again.

👍

Did you guys make it down?

With the 10-20" expected for tomorrow night, we're discussing rescheduling my Baltimore interview on Weds.

Indeedy. I'm typing this from Barboursville. The difference between Morgantown and Huntington in snowfall amounts is remarkable.

what's the elevation up in Mo-town?

H-town is in that silly valley and that eats up a lot of potential snow.

See Buffalo does get enough snow its just that we are super efficient in cleaning up during/after the storm. Its not very often when we get overwhelmed. If the area didn't have such a good system it would be much worse. Everyone is just used to getting butt pounded by snow it doesn't phase us.

Isn't that the WNY mentality overall though...everything sucks, but we're used to it by now. Our economy has sucked forever, our sports teams have sucked forever, our roads have sucked forever, our weather has sucked forever, and so on. A long time ago, we just kind of sucked it up and got used to dealing with it.

Buffalo - Sucking forever since 1801.

Bars are open until 4am, most cities they close at 2am. Its that extra two hours of drinking away your sorrows.

Then how do you cope with living in Buffalo, young padawan? :meanie:

I mean, of course, aside from Burrito Bay. Glutton King Challenge winner what?

So school here was canceled today and tomorrow as well. Time to go to the school-wide snowball fight.

I have never wanted to leave a city this BAD, what a godforsaken place!

There are people who actually LOVE this place. I can't get my head around that.

Rust belt. NYC and Albany hoard most of our tax money. Inept politicians. What are ya gonna do?

There are people who actually LOVE this place. I can't get my head around that.

I would lay odds that 90%+ of those people were born and raised here. The hometown effect is indeed strong.

Congratulations on the win! It's like eating a small child in a half hour.

Aside from the challenge, I'm not that big a fan of Burrito Bay. I'll go to Colosso any day over that.

I've only been to Burrito Bay for the challenge. Amherst is a hell of a haul from my hometown anyway, unless I'm crashing at my aunt's house in Snyder, so I usually just go to the Hamburg Mighty Taco if I'm in the mood for faux Mexican cuisine.

If I go to Amherst to get food from a restaurant, it's gonna be Leonardi's. Best pizza ever.

I've never been...I only live about a mile away, so I might have to give it a try. I'm partial to the Amherst Ale House, myself.

Ever been in Alternative Brews on Sheridan? They allow smoking in there through some loophole of selling cigars. Anyway, I was looking for Sam Adams Utopias online, and saw that they had it there (this was a few months ago.) Needless to say, I paid my $12 for a 1 oz portion and nursed it for 20 minutes. Like maple-ey vanilla cognac. Too bad the smoke made me sick after I left.

That's probably been my best experience in Buffalo thus far. And I agree exactly with what Prazi said, it snows just enough to piss you off 4 mornings out of the week, where you need to clean off the iced-up snow from your car.

Back in Hyde Park, NY (next to poughkeepsie), we had more snow than this. And it's the hudson valley, meaning tons of hills. If you didn't have 4WD, a lot of my friends wouldn't be able to go back home from work, since you're pretty much descending hills to the hudson river, and ascending them again moving away from it.

I hate NY. But I like the changing seasons, so I'll probably end up staying in state, or somewhere close-by if I can stand it. The only thing I hate more than NY are the *****s running it. Literally the blind leading the blind here.

I love NYC, I hate NYS. I'm actually for that proposal that called for NYC and Long Island seceding from New York and forming their own state called Greater New York.

I would love to sever all economical ties with down state. I think of NYC is the 30 yo fat brother who still lives at home with mom eating cheesy poofs playing the newest Xbox games, too poor and too greedy to live on his own, leaching the life out of the rest of the entire house. What a money pit.

Oh a great article on snow...
http://www.buffalonews.com/cityregion/story/952394.html

and I do love my home town. People are friendly, the food is excellent and for the little we do have around here we appreciate it (ie the buffalo bills and sabres). Nowhere else will you find wings as good as here.

Yeah, but most of the tax dollars come from downstate. Granted, a lot of them get dumped right back down there, but New York's fiscal situation would be a lot worse without it.

I don't know about that. I think given the vast economic differences between upstate (blue collar, working man type economy) and NYC (fat cats, investment and banking based economy), there's an obvious disparity there. And since most of the politicians in state come from NYC and Albany, most of the interests are hedged that way. Buffalo is wildly underfunded. Now, given, the city is run by a bunch of pants-on-head ******s who couldn't be fiscally responsible and hold down a budget if their lives depended on it, but that's still only a part of the bigger problem. Case in point, my hometown has a giant hole in one of the more prominent roads that makes it completely impassible, and it's gone for two years without being fixed. Why? Because everybody is too damned busy trying to pass the blame and the cost to a different level of government to actually figure out how to fix the problem. I digress.

Economically, I think it would be a much better situation for both upstate and downstate if there was a separation into two separate states. It would get rid of the wildly clashing conflict in interest that currently exists in our state. And, hell, it wouldn't be the first time a state has split in two and done fine. Right, Mike?

I'm really sorry to say this, don't hate me. I mean, I like Duff's wings (and obviously Duff's>Anchor Bar), but if you're ever in Hyde Park, NY, you really need to go to this bar named Darby O'Gills. Everytime I go home, I remember how much better the wings are there. And I'm sure somewhere else in the US, there are better wings than Darby's.

And I'm gonna find them. Eventually.

Anchor bar sucks. Duffs are pretty good but the best wings are not at either of those places. Theres a bar in East Aurora called Bar Bill. They have the best wings that I have had.

Duffs are great but sometimes they aren't perfect. You gotta catch them on a good day.

+1. I'm not even sure where I would say the best wings I've ever had are, but Bar Bill is definitely in the conversation. The Moose Lodge and Southtowner in Springville both make a mean wing, but I don't know if I'd say either are the best. Overall, though, it won't take anybody long to hunt down a great pizza, some great wings, or a great fish fry in the Buffalo area.

Holy ****, we're having a conversation about Buffalo food and we haven't even touched on fish fries yet? WTF?

If you don't mind my asking, what high school did you graduate from and what year?

Congratulations, you've just chosen where I'm eating tonight. Gotta get me some good wings, I'll try em out and let you know what I think.

Don't get me wrong, duff's has good wings, I just need...BETTER. I'm a wing *****. And while we're on it, I'm still pretty new to this area; where else can I get some good food?

Leonardi's! It's on the corner of Millersport Highway and Eggert Road.

dwyers irish pub in tonawanda (webster st) also has very good wings. its also a bit closer to campus.

I'm afraid to go back there. It has bad juju.
uh, well if you decide to go to dwyers don't over-do the drinking. a student got a dwi on the way home from the bar. that person is no longer with us. since that fateful evening, no one has been back since.

but on the flip side their wings were really good. And it was very cheap I remember some times walking out of there with a bar tab of 15 dollars after having 3 beers, 10 wings and fries.

We need a priest to bless the place so we can all go back. i miss those wings.

DDOB! My cousin works for them, so I might as well give them the cheap plug.

Duffs is alright, usually crowded and long wait though. Anchorbar is just living off the legacy, no longer the king of wings. Bar Bill is good stuff. There's a bar off exit 1 on the 190, called Partners Pizzeria and Bar, they have like 30 cent wings on monday nights. Really good place that not many people know about. Another great small place is Swannie House, about 2-3 blocks from HSBC arena. Nine Eleven Tavern in south buffalo is very good also, although not really as hot as the name implies.

If you like bbq wings though, the ultimate is the Lafayette Tap Room. Its downtown on the corner of clinton and washington (lafayette square, thursday in the square). They smoke their wings, so they get a great flavor similar to bbq ribs. All of their food is good there (bbq meatloaf sandwich, pulled pork, etc) There's a lot of good blues bands that come through there too.

Alright, who here is in favor of some chicken wing excursions over the summer? We can get an SDN group together and hit up the Chicken Wing Festival in August, and on random nights over the summer we can hit up the places that were mentioned in this post. I'll even DD free of charge so that y'all can get your beer on.
