SOAP 2019 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Regardless of shutdown, I believe it will be handled in as orderly a fashion as possible. I hate to be the 'back in my day' person, but it's still better than the Scramble (I had to do that the last year it existed).

Id have to respectfully disagree. I would rather be in charge of my own fate rather than some computer glitch

I am terrified and did not expect this at all. I had a program call me while the rank list was open, saying they thought I was a highly valued candidate and they look forward to working with me... however it turns out I didn't match with them at all and they had 6 unfilled slots. I was devastated that they chose not to even rank me after falsely giving me the impression that they wanted me. I honestly didn't rank them high, but I was hoping they would be my fallback.

If the above bolded is true, perhaps they had a snafu where their rank list was never submitted. Happened at Columbia cardio a few years ago IIRC. If they still have spots, I'd try to soap into them or contact them, as long as that wouldn't violate NRMP rules (which I am very unclear on). Worth a try.

Imagine 12 noon yesterday. GO everyone who didn't match starts faxing/phoning/begging every program that is open.

What happens when that many people are calling/faxing programs? Yah, for all intents and purposes, it's the same as an online shut down, you can't get though to anyone...unless you are one of the lucky ones. Maybe one would be happier spending their whole Monday fruitlessly trying to contact programs and knowing the spots are disappearing as you are on hold, the line is busy/going to voicemail, etc.?, because that's how it was.

I helped others do it and had to do it myself the following year. The goal was to get a team of people together to have as many people as possible calling programs and HOPE that someone gets through. You would have a laptop up and be watching program spots disappear before your eyes as you were trying to get a fax to go through to a program.

different strokes I suppose...

I am applying to FM and am a DO with average-to-low COMLEX scores. I don't know how I will fare among other applicants, especially since they hardly have time to review everyone's applications now! I'm at such a loss.

Feels. I had a program do the same thing to me after I did their intensive Sub-I at a time they would all remember me. Stayed up past some of the residents and tried to be as helpful as I could. According to the residents/attendings, who I had a very good relationship with, I did twice the notes for them than any other student that year. I had also done rotations in all of my core rotations but one at that hospital.

Didn't even get an interview over my scores.

Can't cry about it now. Although I did apply again in SOAP. 😳

Go where they want you I've been told.

You should definitely pounce on the first thing that pops up in round 1. You could get more offers in rounds 2 or 3, but there are no guarantees and the chance of matching goes down the further into the process you go.
I can confirm this. Most positions are filled early.. Last year, 1,268 positions were in SOAP. 695 were filled in the first round. At the end of round 2, only 218 positions remained.

Could you shed any light on how many open positions remained in the scramble after round three. Trying to use this time to consider my options. Thanks!

What specialties did everyone apply to? I applied FM / OBGYN and OBGYN prelim

just to clarify, programs will reach out today and they can send out offers today?

They'll send offers starting tomorrow at 12pm during the first round of soap, followed by the second round and then the last round on Thursday

This Good luck everyone.

Is it possible to get offers without phone interviews?

Just asking if today is quiet should I fear the worst?

It has happened to people in previous SOAP threads but its rare, I think its best to expect an offer only if you've interviewed

guys, they closed ERAS again. This is getting to be an even bigger **** show than I anticipated

PDs on Twitter were commenting that they could review only 1 applicant's file and then the system would freeze up again. So it's not working for them still 🙁😎

About how many candidates do they usually interview for each spot in the SOAP? I assume with this limited time , they are going to have to cut back?

Ok, maybe this is getting as bad as scramble now. My point is that info could not even get though to the programs in the scramble...which seems to be happening in SOAP this year now. Hopefully they intervene to guarantee it is still a fair process that puts all on as much of an equal ground as possible.

As I recall, there were still quite a few positions, but it was because the programs had decided not to fill them.

I prefer the Scramble. At least the student could mobilize forces and do something. Now, all they can do is wait until they are called.
The power has shifted entirely in favor of the PD's.

Agreed. I feel like with such limited time, a lot of key places for me aren't even going to get to my application to even know I am in the SOAP. I suppose we are all in the same boat though in that regard.

They’ll interview as many as they can, or as many as they are interested in. I got calls right up until about 2hrs before the first round offers went out.

In some ways, yes. But I will say that with SOAP, I did like that I had multiple offers to consider, and they all came in together so I had the opportunity to weight them against each other and make a decision based on preference rather than just taking the first program that offered line would have to happen with scramble.

To me, the scramble sounds much more terrible.

Did you phone interview with all of the programs that offered you a spot?

Anyone get interview call/emails yet? For people who went through this in previous years, how long after the applications were released before you started receiving communications?

I'm not sure if we are allowed to contact you if we don't know for sure if we already applied to the program in the SOAP.

Don't want to risk a match violation

Nothing yet.

We are unable to PM you! And would advise caution in case of any match violation!

I started getting calls a couple hours after programs could see apps.

What's everyone doing to pass the time? The waiting game seriously sucks, especially since we don't know when programs will be able to view our applications.

Unfortunately I didn't match PM&R this year, I am currently SOAPing for both A and R PM&R programs listed, but also have branched out to IM and FM programs too. Used maybe 33 apps, mostly to FM. I haven't received calls as of yet. I hope we all get something dude, I hate working for a clinic right now and feeling hampered by not being BE/BC, it just feels weird. At least I don't have to worry about bills like some of you since I have my unrestricted license, but know the importance of a residency in the long run.

Yes. I even auditioned there and they all loved me and said they hoped to work with me in the future. I don't know how likely it is that they had a glitch on their end … but I hope so. I did re-apply so I'm looking forward to get feedback from them. I wouldn't contact them first just in case of violating the rules.
