Solo Practice Possible?

I'm curious how feasible it is to go directly into solo practice out of residency. I met a chief resident on the interview trail when I interviewed in 08, and she went directly into solo practice (with privileges at the institution where she trained). I'm wondering how that was possible. How easy is it to go right into solo practice? We have some at my program, but they are in a coverage group or do little OB.

Certainly possible, because I've seen a few that are solo, but probably not practical. I've seen more solo practitioners join/create a group than I have seen remain solo.

The few solo ones I've seen all end up taking call with other groups so that they're not on q1 call.

Its possible. Most often, hospitals will front you the money or put in the investment (ie. office, staffing) until you get going (1-2 years) and then they back off with either forgiveness of the loan for certain number of years of service you'll put in or collect it back in payments.

You'll also see this when certain residents bring a skillset that the hospital needs (ie. MIS surgery to replace a retiring physician).

The more adventureous route is to get a practice loan through various resources including BofA.
