Someone is getting into these schools with below-average scores...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Forget URM's, how about all the white folks who have legacy spots at schools? I Guess no one really likes to talk about that.

Or how about all the Asians who are discriminated against for lesser qualified white applicants?

*POP* *POP*

That's the sound of 2 cans of worms opening.

Darn it don't these schools see that I am a non-trad I should at least get interviews even though my numbers suck.

Well, landing on carriers is pretty cool. Did he? :meanie:

The problem with that and with Naval aviation in general, is that the fact that they have to operate on carriers ends up taking up some of their capability. You can only have so many airplanes on the carrier. They have to be a certain size. Then you have to defend the carrier. So of all the sorties (flights) the carrier launches, only a certain percentage of them can actually affect the target, many, many others have to defend the carrier or orbit waiting to pick Naval aviators out of the ocean. So for a whole lot of effort, only a certain amount goes towards the real mission.

The benefit is that you don't have to have a base to operate from.

Look at Afghanistan sometimes. Consider where carriers might float for that conflict

SEALS don't land planes, do they?

Gotta love some good ole military ribbing. 👍 One upon a time I was an acceptee to the USAF academy, then I came to my senses tried to go Navy (Marine Corp, Dad what can I say) and was sumarrily REJECTED (no adult onset asthmatics, thank you VERY much).

Still, I vicariously seek to be a Naval Officer one day! 🙁

Go Navy!!!

I wouldn't put something like that past them to complete a mission, but I bet the plane doesn't ever takeoff again

The Navy is actually really cool. One of my first assignments was a joint training assignment and one of our commanders (skipper) was Navy. He was one of the best commanders I have ever had.

You know, I hate to say anything, because being a non-URM I am opening myself up to all sorts of emnity here, but WHY DOES IT ALWAYS COME DOWN TO SKIN COLOR!!! Now pay attention, because I say this with respect to everyone, no matter nationality, race, religion, social circumstances, ect., ect., ect...
Everyone who is applying for medical school is working their asses off, albeit in different ways. Depending on your background, you might have to work harder on the verbal section of the MCAT or (like in my case) the physics questions. Some people have to support a family and work full time; others have to overcome a poor educational background. I think that non-trads can sometimes be more competitive than traditional grads, and sometimes less. IT DEPENDS ON THE PERSON. We are all unique and talented in our own ways, if we weren't, we wouldn't stand a chance of getting in to med school, and we wouldn't be posting our thoughts on this forum.

The admissions process is not always "fair". All of us will be judged at least somewhat subjectively through our interviewer's eyes; regardless of how impartial they try to be, they are also human and have human biases.

That being said, I appreciated the honesty of a Doctor I spoke with on a recent interview who admitted that sometimes applicants who were not truely competitive for a slot were accepted, based primarily on their URM status. I am not denigrating anyone who comes from a disadvantaged background of any sort, and the extra effort they have had to put in to reach the same goals as those people coming from a more opportune environment. However, to say that discrimination does not occur against members of the majority is just as dishonest as saying that discrimination against minorities doesn't occur.

So... for easy answers to the unjustices in life; there are none. In the meantime lets just try to see people as people. In an ideal world specific numbers and where you start shouldn't count as much as how far you've come.

I am now stepping off my soapbox... Yes folks, Elvis has left the building.
