I was busy looking at various residencies i would consider going into (even though i am only a pre-med) and this one question arose out of my mind.

Why Do you have to go to a seperate school to be a foot doctor (DPM)?

I understand that the foot is a very complex unit and requires extensive specialized training. However, Doctors who want to study the heart, the brain, the kidney, or any type of surgery go to the same medical school. Maybe the program is much shorter? I am unclear as to why they need their own schools.

It's because they're not MD's or DO's. Each medical school gives only one degree. To get a DPM degree, you go to a DPM school.
