my parents and i were always wondering about this...

we have a family friend, who after her first year at a small liberal arts college in the states claimed that their child was accepted to mt. sinai medical school.

she has never written her mcat, and apparently mt. sinai would hold her spot for a couple of years if she wished to pursue musical studies abroad for a bit after her undergrad.

apparently she was accepted based on some hummanity stream.

has anyone ever heard of this, or are they bull****ting us? or is this some execptional case?

just curious....more so my mom, who hates to see my struggle with applications, while her friend's daughter just seemed to get in after her 1st year of undergrad.

😕

I'm kind of confused by your term "humanity stream"... it brings to mind a river of people, just what the hell are you referring to?

lol i'm sorry...but, thats basically waht they called it

some special program for those in the hummanities, such that they don't need to take the mcat or whatever.

i'm not quite sure myself!

but this special stream of acceptance after 1st or 2nd year undergrad...its not even posted anywhere on the mt. sinai website.

all seems a bit too sketchy.

Actually, such a program does exist at Mt. Sinai.

It is mainly for social science and humanities majors that apply to Mt. Sinai in their second year and are given an early assurance of admission.

Additionally, these folks take part in a summer program and do not have to take the MCAT, as far as I understand.

It's a great program, the only problem is that most of us as sophomores weren't as concerned about admissions as we are now in the process of applying.

Apparently, it goes a bit further than that.

The Humanities and Medicine Program provides a path to medical school that offers maximum flexibility in the undergraduate years for students to explore their interests in humanities and social sciences at top liberal arts colleges and research universities. The program assures highly motivated undergraduates admission to Mount Sinai upon successful completion of program requirements and graduation from their undergraduate program. MCAT's are neither required nor permitted to be taken.

so if mcats aren't permitted to be taken, then don't you HAVE to go to mt. sinai?
sounds more similar to early decision than assurance..

yup, you have to go to mount sinai if you do this program. you are not supposed to take much science at all in your undergrad, but you do a summer program at mount sinai after your soph and junior years where you have intensive science courses.

it is pretty easy to be jealous of people that go this route, but think about ALL of the "premeds" who you knew freshman year who decided to quit after taking a few pre-reqs. the mount sinai kids never even take science courses, so how will they possibly know they can handle the work? how will they know they actually want to do medicine? i'm sure it works out for some, and it is an interesting way of diversifying the med school, but i am glad to have taken the appropriate courses. at least now that they're over  .

trust me i'm not jealous of the person.... considering her personality etc., i wouldn't want to trade places with her.

of course i'd love to have bypass all these application procedures.

plus, i wish i had the security she feels. like, she can do whatever she wants the next few years, knowing that when she's done 'finding herself' she will have a spot in medical school. meanwhile, i face so much uncertainty regarding the next year. that would be nice, for once, not to have to worry about where i was going.

i wish i could see into the future. i'm only applying to the american schools as a back up for the canadian schools.... to diversify. since ontario is a highly competitive province. but if i could see in the future, it would be so easy, just to know whether i even have to bother with these applications.

btw, what is a decent amount of schools to apply to in general? what about safety schools?

i'll be applying to 6 schools in ontario, and then dalhousie, mcgill, and calgary. that's 9 schools right there. i was thinking of applying to 8 american schools tops, perhaps even less. not sure. i feel i'm fairly competitive (depending on my august mcat scores), but i know i'm late in the game for the american schools.

oh man i met someone who worked in the admissions office at queen's in canada (he was visiting the lab i work in since there are a bunch of canadians there) and he said that it's getting insanely difficult to get into canadian medical schools. good luck with that!

i've been told 10-15 if you've got the whole 3.6+, 30+ going on in the US and 15-20 if you're borderline or a little bit below.
