We got a new weekly dental update on bonuses and it stated the following

NDAA 08 establishes authority for combining special pays into a new special pays program- General Dentists first in late FY10.
• Pays AB (Accession), IP (Incentive), RB (retention) BP (board).
• AB: $37.5K/yr x4; IP: $20K; RB $18-25K/year depending on contract.

Can anyone decipher this?

Thanks.

Not too many people know all the specifics yet. To make a long story even longer. The Special pay programs in the military are extremely complex. Medical special pays are determined by a tri-service group known as the Health Professions Incentive Working Group. They meet regularly and set all the rates for the special pays. Our special pay programs are part of the DoD special pays programs. The special pays program was getting too hard to manage because of so many different special pays. The NDAA directs the consolidation of like types of special pays to create less catagories of special pays.

An AF Dental officer sits on this working group for the AFMS. They are still working out the specifics of how the pays will be combined. The idea is to streamline the process. We should know more specifics soon.

Only some of the special pays are being combined. The official word is that all dental officers will recieve no less in bonuses that they currently recieve now. Once combined - most will stay about the same. The advantage for combining the pays makes the paperwork easier on The special pays branch and DFAS for cutting the bonuses. It also changes the approval level for making increases to the special pays - making it easier for the services to adjust.

One area where an increase will occur is for those junior officers that are board certified. There won't be the sliding scale anymore (number of yrs in determines amount paid) - they will be given the max amount the same as senior officers.

Anyone have any updates on what would happen if you take the new special pay system when coming on active duty as a GP and then going through a residency? Do you get reverted back to the old special pay system once you graduate from the residency since they haven't implemented the new special pay system for specialists?

I'm pretty sure they want to keep the IP as the way of the future for all dentists regardless of specialty. Not so confusing vs ASP/VSP and will weed out those without a dental license. The RB will be after your commitment is up and will be based on tier specialty/years of recommitment. You can still get Board Certified Pay (BCP) after residency and it seems that most do.

Thanks for clarifying that. How much is Board Certified Pay? I just did a google search and found if you're in under 10 years the BCP is only 2500/year...is that right?

You can find a lot regarding pays on military.com. That is where I find a lot of info. However, some is a bit out of date (ie. still has AB as $60,000 total). The BCP is between $2500-6000 depending on time in service. Not much of a carrot to get board certified, but better than nothing.
