Medscape Physician Lifestyle & Happiness Report 2019
Umm folks we have a problem, although anyone reading SDN for more than 5 minutes who sees the Path subforum might have predicted this. On the plus side, we are NOT dead last. That honor belongs to ID and Neurology. But we have happy marriages!
Sadly probably not, just the whole autism spectrum thing we have going buffers us from actually realizing our spouses detest us. And to all the pathologists who roll up to work in a beater Honda, Toyota or Subaru, you are not alone, stand proud.

Which physicians are happiest outside of work (Pathology ranked #27 out of 29). Reason: With the average pathologist having hobbies like ham radio and photography to "cut loose", the difference being happy outside work and work itself is barely noticeable...

Which physicians have the highest self-esteem (Pathology ranked #26 out of 29). Reason: If you pick a specialty because you prefer to avoid eye contact and human interaction, chances are your self-esteem isn't that high to begin with...

Which specialties have the happiest marriages (Pathology ranked #11 out of 29)....Winning?

What cars do physicians drive (Toyota & Honda #1 & #2). Reason: It's the only vehicle for academic pathologists, besides bicycle or public transportation. While private practice pathologists drive the Toyota to work and tuck the Porsche away in the garage...

I'm really surprised that Cardiology has the same happiness as Pathology!

Surely Cardiology is higher paying with "interventional" opportunities, which would lead to greater happiness?

And I think the "happiest marriages" doesn't take those who have already divorced into account,
it'd be interesting to see what the divorce rate is in pathology compared with other specialties.

4x4 Dodge Truck here.

I am surprised Cadillac is so low on that list. I see a lot of Cadillac and Tesla in the lot here.

Lame survey .. No rad onc subcategory

No Tesla in the auto survey?

**** data

Im going to use my Clue skills that told me it was Col. Mustard in the Library with the Candlestick to say you are a Rad Onc with a Telsa...

Why are you concerned, doesnt this validate you as a totally unique and unclassifiable professional??

Its the honda driving internists that should be concerned.

A big chunk of docs drive them in our area, it just seems like an obvious oversight and laziness on the part of the surveyors. Tesla has been killing it in the large luxury sedan market for years and model 3 was the best selling luxury car overall in 2018 in the US market.

And yes rad onc is a separate identifiable specialty in most surveys. Again just more shoddy survey work.

FWIW, I have seen similar “surveys “ that show rheumatologists at the
bottom of the satisfaction heap. Medicine seems to be subjected to the least scientific and most poorly constructed surveys I have seen over the past
40 years. Who believes this nonsense?

Hold it, lets get some perspective. First off how many of say a 150-200 person medical staff at an average community based hospital are full time Rad Onc? 1, maybe 2? Of that how many have Teslas? Maybe 1 in 10? 1 in 20 even?

They survey cant rationally be invalidated by failing to survey something with an incidence of mere 0.1-0.05%. I understand you are miffed, but not being on the survey gives an intellectual basis to say whatever you want in terms of self-esteem. I see no downside for you.

At my hospital there is 3 ROs and at least 6-8 Tesla being driven by cards, pulm and pcps etc.

Say what you will about the RO oversight but the Tesla oversight is glaring.

That probably depends on where you live. If you're in CA, sure, prob lots of Teslas. Midwest? South? Prob far less. I don't think there's much to fuss about if a silly self-reported survey doesn't include whatever very specific car you drive. Who cares?

I don't really care, I just think it detracts from the data, however you want to interpret it

I'm in the southeast BTW. Tons of Teslas in TX also

No love for Jags, or Maserattis, or Porche, or McLaren...

I hardly think this "list" is representative of my peers.

Ok very few McLarens outside Cali and FL, plenty of porches...yeah i think Jaguar/LandRover is under-represented...
Numerous RR/RRsports in the doctor's lot of any hospital with surgeons.

No physician is driving a McLaren to the hospital. Im friends with one of the wealthiest physicians in all California, he sometimes takes a helo to work from his house, owns a dozen sports cars and still would never drive a McLaren to work....

Ive even been to Palmaz's estate (go goggle Dr. Palmaz). He is beyond wealthy, like Rockefeller level. He owns a literally fortress the military would be envious of, has the largest private Porsche collection in the world and still would never drive a McLaren to work..

Its bad enough a-holes drive Audi R8s.

Anything beyond a 911 threatens to destroy patient trust in what being a physician is all about...dont do it.

The low end Maserati is okay. Lamborghini maybe if its older and used.

HIDE all the toys like that. Just like you dont bring a 19 year old stripper to a Medical staff cocktail party, no matter how much you want to show off. Resist being THAT GUY.

Like all these “survey lists”, I wholeheartedly agree. This one is nonsense.

Lol. One oncologist I am associated with drives his Aston Martin supercar to the clinic, and parks it right next to where his patients park. How can someone see that and not think "christ, what an a-hole"... I know I do.

Seriously. If you're a plastic surgeon in LA, by all means drive an Aston Martin. Your "patients" (ie clients) will eat it up. But an oncologist? Rolling up to clinic in an Aston Martin next to the cachectic mother of three dying of breast cancer who's coming in for her chemo? Yeah, maybe think twice about flaunting how much you make off her as she dies.

How about instead of rolling around in a car that costs more than most houses, docs hit the gym?

I could roll up in a honda prius and get more cred stepping out jacked standing straight up than some fool who is 50lbs over and has to wiggle his way out of his McLaren.

Novel idea. And its only like 20-40 bucks a month in gym dues.

Yeah big misses there as well .. Forgot about RRs and LRs... Rumor is they spend more time in the shop than at your house though.

I see a ton of panameras and a few 911s.. Survey miss there as well. Occasional ghibli or Quatro as well, but the Maserati oversight probably isn't as bad as the Porsche /jag /LR /RR/Tesla ones

If I see a physician roll up in a Bentley or Aston Martin, I could care less. It is THEIR money and this isn't North Korea. Cars are a terrible investment anyways.

I would invest in this company over wasting money on a car.

Oh, it's not that bad. Though you have to enjoy dinner conversation like "ZOMG don't eat that sushi...do you know nothing about vulnificus vibrans..." Or gems like "so I remember back in residency I was on an autopsy rotation and there was this diener who came in high and dropped a brain on the floor."

OK on second thought,

FLEE YOUR PATHOLOGIST NOW

Just kidding. The major downside, I guess, is that you may have to move a couple times. I come from a field of science where academic jobs are few and far between--in that sense, being married to a pathologist feels more like being married to a basic science or humanities professor than to a physician. But y'all are sufficiently hawt as to make up for it.
