I am curious to know, what area are some of you interested in and why? Personally, I am interested in Anesthesia, Cardiology, or Family Practice. My reasons are exceptional or well thought out.

While this may change, currently I would like to specialize in OB/GYN, with a subspeciality in reproductive endocrinology (fertility specialist). I have seen many close friends be helped by assisted fertility, and was actually able to witness a baby being born (who was concieved through assisted fertility). To me, it is the most wondorous part of the human condition.

I want to go into primary care and work in underserved urban areas. My movtivation comes from working where Im most needed. Im most interested in General Internal Medicine with emphasis/training in Women's Health. This area of medicine has been overlooked. I'm sure in unerserved areas it has been completely neglected. I may combine that with an a Masters in Public health...

hi tanya,
i think we might have similar interest in terms of where we want to work. i'm also interested in working in either underserved community, rural area, or minority community. i'm also looking into a combined mph/md program, or maybe just md itself if i can't handle all the school work.
so are you applying this year? or you're in med school already?

MTY and Tanya --
I am in the same boat! I could have written Tanya's post. Did either of you apply to Allegheny? They have a Women's Health program. Tanya -- are you applying to MD/MPH programs? I am but don't know anything yet. One school says that that makes your app more competitive, most don't seem to care.

I am interested in neonatology or maybe practice general pediatrics. If some diseases/problem are caught early enough a child has a better chance of a "normal" life as he/she gets older.

Hello MTY and KimR!
I am applying summer '00. When I graduated I had planned to get my MPH before I went to medical school. Of course plans change! Now Im taking full time post-bac biology to boost my science GPA.

Ive been considering applying to a few MD/MPH programs. How tough is the dual workload?

Kim: which schools did you apply to? When you say "more competitive" do they mean you application looks better...or its more of a challege to get accepted? Have you spoken to any MD/MPH students?

hi KimR and Tanya,
i'm glad to hear that we're in the same boat too. i really have to check into md/mph program, because i personally interest in preventive medicine and education. i do feel we need more health career professionals to reach out to the people who are being neglicted and teach them about health. i think the effective way to treat a disease is to prevent it at first place through good education. that's why i believe md/mph would satisfy the goal that i seek. do you know any md/mph programs? doesn't have to be too competive, i just want to get in.

Pitt has an MD/MPH program where you take a year between your second and third year to complete the MPH.

One school said that they were giving specific preference to applicants to dual degree programs, so my my app was more competitive than it could have been. But I got the rejection letter from there this weekend. =( However, other schools seem to not care; one school said that if I was accepted to the MD program my acceptance to MPH or MBA program would be automatic.

Another thing to think about is what you want to do w/MPH. Some schools use MPH to emphasize tropical medicine (Tulane), while others emphasize community health (Oregon HSU). I really want to do a lot of prevention and patient education work, that is why I am applying for dual degree.

I too am applying to MD/MPH programs. I am interested in tropical medicine/ epidemiology. My family spent some time living in Africa and South America and I became fascinated and horrified with the diseases people live with there that we in the US never even see. I.e. malaria, parasites, sleeping sickness, etc. I would love to work in a government organization like the WHO or join the military and work abroad. Anyway, some of the MD/MPH programs I have thought of applying to are: Alabama, UCLA, UCSF, USC, Yale, GWU, Emory, Northwestern, Kansas, Tulane (for sure), Hopkins, Harvard, Tufts, Michigan, St Louis, Columbia, NYMC, Rochester, Duke, Ohio State, OHSU, Hahnemann, Pittsburgh, Virginia Commonwealth, and Med Col of Wisconsin. Most of these are pretty good schools so I hope applying for the joint program makes you more competitive.

wow, i'm so amazed by what you all want to do. i believe we have a similar goal and intention. i do have one question, what is Tropical medicine?
for erikaautumn, are you applying for 2000?

thanks,

No, I am applying for 2001. I graduate December of 2000.
