Hello all, I was wondering if there are any Sigma Sigma Phi members out there who can give advice on how to be most competitive for getting into Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP).

I know it various from chapter to chapter, but any suggestions would be helpful, especially if anyone has ideas about MSUCOM's chapter.

I know there is considerable debate concerning the merits of SSP, vis a vis AOA.

However, all criticisms aside, it can't hurt especially if you attend to complete an AGME residency, considering ERAS application has a space for it next to an AOA membership.

Double Post- I also posted on Pre-Osteo.

not sure about MSUCOM, but at my school it was purely a popularity contest, as long as those who were in liked you, you were in. Academic requirements were a joke.

I'm in it at MSUCOM. Just apply when they send out the applications, do decent in your classes, and stay involved on or off campus. There is not much more to it. It is a service oriented organization, so volunteering and leadership are what they want from future members. It isn't like the AOA for the MD's.

at rvu you are invited if you're in the top 20 something percent of the class.

This.

And it would be in your best interest to be straight forward in your application. Do not add a lot of fluff, convoluted wording, or sound cocky.

You'll get an application to apply - I agree, just be straightforward 👍

Thanks everyone. I've heard the comments that it is a huge popularity contest. Sounds like, at MSU it is more merit based.

Its totally variable between schools. Im VP of our chapter and dont have the foggiest clue what our criteria is besides no more than 25% of the class.

I wouldn't call it a popularity contest. However, who you know carries weight for e-board positions, memberships and jobs wherever you go. Sometimes merit isn't the only thing people look at. If you rub someone the wrong way, it is an easy way for them to write that person off. I can't speak on the behalf of other med schools regarding their selection process. Just be personable and do not come across cocky or self centered. I'm pretty sure residency programs look at applicants in a similar way. No one wants to work with someone that is difficult to work with or is abrasive to others.

On a side note, has anyone been to the national website lately? That freakin thing needs updating bad. Think the most recent "news" was like from 2010. Good thing this organization is purely a CV boost considering the national chapter doesn't actually DO anything. Do they have meetings? If so when? where? how? It kind of reminds me of "golden key" where I paid my dues and joined and then never heard a word from them again lol.

For example, this is the most recent news on the news page.....

2008 Board of Directors/General Assembly Meeting October 26th, 2008 Sigma Sigma Phi had their annual Board of Directors/General Assembly meeting in Las Vegas NV on Sunday October 26th, 2008. We had a great turn out and were able to accomplish quite a bit this year. Please go to the annual report section to see just how active these chapters are and what they have been able to accomplish over the past year and what their plans are for the upcoming year.

PCOM's admission criteria is:

90% + 10hrs CS or
87% + 25hrs

Plus an Essay/Leadership qualities/positions

More than half my class could meet our SSP academic requirements. The rest of it was "community service" (though everyone I know who got in does the bare minimum of that)... so in the end, who knows?

WesternU COMP has something similar to this, and names are not on the application during the review process (not quite a popularity contest), at least that's what we were told

Yes when you are a first year, no when you are 3rd/4th years, at least not at our school, not "more than half of my class" maintain 90% after 2nd year, and they do kick you out if you fall below that

This happens at my school too...probably something to look into. I don't think it happens very frequently (if at all) but probably something worth thinking about.

So is this even helpful when it comes to residency like alpha omega alpha for allo?

psi sigma alpha in my opinion is more prestigious. you are only accepted if you are in the top 15% of your class

Aye, perhaps, but it isnt listed on ERAS right next to AOA. Sigma Sigma Phi is. Regardless of your own opinion, the opinion of PDs is what is really important.

Since SSP is an honor/service society, my school (NSU), tended to select the club leaders, SGA leaders, or people who were unusually active in extracurricular service activities. Then the people with poor GPAs were weeded out of that group. The remainder were sent applications.

As an aside, as a DO you can get both SSP and AOA, but not before graduation. I got into SSP as a medical student, then was selected to AOA as a resident (the allopathic medical school affiliated with my residency program decided to nominate me). Of course by that point it doesn't help with residency apps, but it still looks good on a CV.
