I've heard some rumors that St. Joes IM program is having problems. Can anybody confirm/deny? Rumors range from complete loss of accreditation to censures.

You can look online at the ACGME website (http://www.acgme.org/adspublic/) to get information about a program's accreditation status. It looks like the program you are asking about has Continued Full Accreditation. There is nothing there to suggest it has lost accreditation or is on provisional accreditation.

A friend of mine who is a third year at the University of Arizona told me that he had also heard that St. Joe's had recently lost their accreditation. I interviewed there this year for IM residency but chose not to rank them as the program was by far the worst program I visited. The residents there were completely apathetic about the program, there were no fellowship opportunities (nearly everyone in their program goes on to do primary care), and I generally got the feeling that the residency program was poorly managed. They recently hired a new program director from Case Western back in September who seems like he might be able to turn the program around, but he has a lot of work to do.

I heard the same thing, but haven't heard anyone who matched there say anything. Maybe they are just on probation?????

the rumors are true... THe program has one month to "renovate the program" or the get the boot. I am at a neighboring program for 1 year and I have had first hand contact from a friend at the program.

I don't know what is going to happen to the newly match residents or the the prelims or transition. Hope it helps. 😕

DISCLOSURE: I am the Director of Academic Affairs at St. Joseph's

In my 25 years in Medical Education NO PROGRAM has had a greater turn around !!

It is unfortunate that we have to carry an albatross/rumor around for so long...

FIRST: The program was never has never been on probation
YES: We were on thin ice and had a short time to turn it around in 2005...

WHAT WE DID:
1. Endowed the Chair of Medicine / PD with $1.5 Million
2. Endowed a Medicine Reserach Chair with another $1.5 Million
3. Recruited Faculty...now (2010) with EMPLOYED fulltime Generalists teaching in the Clinics...another fulltime group as employed faculty Academic Hospitalists... Employed fulltime faculty Subspecialists in Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology (2)
4. Hired a new and experienced Clinic Manager who has built a cracker jack team of nurses, ward clerks, social serices and translator support.
5. Created a robust evaluation system...
6. Created multi-disciplinary clinics...

I could go on...in our latest ACGME accreditation inspection we just received four years of accreditation (January 2010)...

As the Hospital Administrator DIO over GME, these changes are not "transient" or temporary....

Whatever you hear about ANY Residency program...if the information is more than 3 years old...get an update !!!

The MATCH is difficult enough in deciding for your career !!!
And I hope that each student finds the BEST EDUCATIONAL FIT for educational motivation and love of this vocation, complimenting your learning style and career success!
