Stand-up Comedy on application?

Well, i've only performed live once, really liked it, and didn't bomb. also, got congratulated by the club owner (most likely for not bombing and making sure the crowd didn't fall asleep).

I plan on trying to get into the club scene through some open-mic nights when i move to uni, so my question is, would this benefit me on an application? or should i omit it? i wouldn't want to come off as a prospective clown doctor (see Children's Hospital)

i hate when people find out i do comedy and then ask that. that's like walking up to a fat person and saying "hey, you're a fatty. go ahead, eat something."

note, not wholly original, but it's the only joke i know that's relative. i'm sure i can think of a one-liner sometime between now and then though.

Keep at it. This is one of those quirky things that makes an applicant different than the cookie cutter applicants that we see by the dozen (or even the gross).

Stick with it. Just make sure you also keep up with the normal pre med activites (volunteering and shadowing).

I'd for sure put that on your app, as long as there is plenty of "serious" stuff (volunteering, research, etc) to go with it. I think it would really make you stand out

You might append a You-Tube link to your application of a successful bit, if it's sufficiently politically correct, that is.

I do stand up and had a silly joke ready for the interview.
"I was nervous for this interview and ended up tinkling on myself before I got here, I guess it's true. Most accidents do happen less than a mile from home."
I know it's a bad joke, but had to think of something super PC.

I do improv comedy and not only put it on my application, but listed it as one of my three most memorable activities. It has come up as a major topic of discussion in at five of my interviews and I've been admitted to two of those schools and feel very good about the other three so I say put it on!

Keep at it. And, honestly, being able to make jokes and get your patients laughing is a GREAT skill to have. I've had many, many patients show appreciation for my ability to get them laughing in the ER. It reduces their stress by distracting them at a very tough moment. As long as you have the sensitivity to know when to remain serious and when to crack a joke (and laugh), it will work out well for you. Patients are people too. They usually like a good laugh and if you can size them up quickly and (even more importantly) accurately you can sometimes even get away with poking a little fun at them as well as at yourself, the hospital, etc. Sometimes, humor is the only way you can reach a patient. I recall one psych pt we had in the ER that I need to cooperate with me. She refused to answer any questions of any of our staff and would not allow anyone near her. When I walked into the room, she became immediately agitated and said "F*** YOU! You.... [long string of curse words" so I responded "Yep, F*** me..." and then made some self-deprecating jokes. Next thing you know, she's laughing and suddenly cooperative...for about 5 minutes -- just long enough for me to get my job done. After that, she got difficult again, but some humor was the gateway to cooperation from her. Don't lose your sense of humor!

I did stand-up comedy once. It was really fun, but not something I could (or should) do more than once (read: not funny). My good friend is a comedian though, so having seen what goes into it, I respect you for going up there. 🙂
