stanford phone call...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pikayou - you're definitely set on Stanford?

Without a doubt. I fell in love with just about everything their program has to offer....five-year plan, time to pursue outside interests, outstanding faculty labs, great success in students winning the HHMI fellowship, small size, location, middle-income assistance, research/teaching/travel stipends. I could go on... 🙂

One other thing...look at their matchlist for last year. Peds at CHOP, medicine at UCSF, 16% of their grads to Harvard hospitals....

do you have the link to their matchlist?

thanks!

Bump.

Who out there is still waiting? This is week 4 for me. So I am not feeling very positive anymore since the trend seems to be you have to get accepted quickly. Maybe they'll prove me wrong in a few hours 🙂

Post if you hear anything.

We've got 3 or 4 Arizonans in the class this year, so don't get discouraged yet!

hmmmmm I don't know if anyone else knows but I guess there is suppose to be some thing for the accepted students on April 30....I dont know if this might help any of you, just thought I share the knowledge....The only reason I know is because Fred Tovar was suppose to come to my school that same day for a presentation but had to move it up a week to avoid any conflict.

there's a revisit the weekend of May 2nd.

i think the revisit starts April 30. it didn't say when it ends though.

Preview weekend is April 29 or 30-May 1. We've already started planning!

And don't forgot, lots of switching happens post-May 15, too!

Does anyone know how to appeal a rejection decision at stanford? 🙁 Do I just send juhn a letter?

sorry if this has already been asked, but does the revisit for stanford cover your travel expenses (airfare, etc.)?? i remember hearing that urms have some travel costs defrayed but i can't remember if it's also for the general accepted pool. thanks for any info. regardless, i'll be out there in may!!!!

has anyone actually signed up for the listserv for accepted students? if so, has it been pretty active? thanks!

finn: I'm not sure about official appeals, but when I interviewed, I did ask Juhn about whether Stanford offered any guidance in the event of a hold or rejection. He said that they didn't do any formal exit interviews or anything like that, but that we could e-mail him about possible next steps following an unfavorable decision. So if you want to appeal, I'm guessing that your best bet would be to e-mail Juhn and see what he recommends. Best of luck to ya!

thanks evenstar...the rejection letter was totally crushing and i'm still in shock. Not that i'm a superstar applicant or that i expected to get in...it's just that i've really been shooting for stanford...i work there, my girlfriend lives two blocks away, and i guess some fantasy imagination of mine has been creating a new life for me and my girlfriend at Stanford...it's just been crushing because she's been crying since the letter got here since we can't really be together unless she gives up all of her stock options to leave with me...i had hoped with a decent interview and a long letter of intent, i'd have a shot at a waitlist rather than a rejection a week after the interview...i don't know if i could handle another rejection from them if i tried to appeal. 🙁

hey finn, i'm really sorry to hear about your situation... i completely sympathize. the admissions process can be pretty subjective and unpredictable--i hope stanford takes your appeal into consideration. maybe you can wring some sort of answer out of them as to why they didn't accept you and then address some of those issues in the appeal? i hope everything works out in the end and that you and your girlfriend are able to stay together. keep the faith, man--you have our support! best wishes.

No, Stanford doesn't cover travel expenses. And I'd definitely recommend signing up for the listserv--we were pretty active, and it's a great way to learn about your new classmates.

Listserve so far has been dead...almost no traffic at all...

i thought last year they paid for people to come there?

Came home from work to find the waitlist letter waiting for me. I was a bit bummed but I also got my first acceptance today to Davis so I really don't feel too bad about the Stanford thing. It was a long shot to begin with, though the interview gave me hope. At least I won't have to wait nervously for the call any more on Thursdays. I am just happy to have gotten as far with Stanford as I did. And best of all I still get to stay near home in Nor Cal for med school. I wish you all the best of luck with Stanford as it is an amazing school. I hope future Thursday nights bring you good news 🙂

Getting an interview really drives your hopes up, but you'll get over the disappointment within a few days.

On what day of the week does Stanford send out interview invitations? Most of the schools I applied to send them out on Fridays. I'm still anxiously waiting.
:scared:

However, congrats to those who got in. 👍

HEY! CONGRATS AZMED!!!! Please PM me I would like to know more about your days in Davis!

I got an invite on last Thrusday (after being complete for like 5 months )
I am not sure if that I a regular thing tho. Also if its any assurance, there are many interview slots open. I could have had a date two weeks from my invite but I couldn't make it that day.

hi guys, thursday night again... does anyone know how many people are on the committee? pikayou said that they all vote before the meeting and if it's not unanimous then they talk about it some more. i'm wondering if the interviewers are on the ad comm, or if they just write up something about you but aren't one of the voting members. maybe the ad comm consists of the admissions counselors? anyone know the details? thanks, and good luck to everyone!

Hey, are you guys saying that even after six months of not hearing anything from the big "S", it is actually possible to be invited for an interview???

I lie in bed at night dreaming of an interview, but of course nothing so far. Heck, I'm just glad I was invited to fill out a secondary. But still ...

😍

I am silently worshiping them from afar ...

I just got a phone call and they said they are not accepting Doctorcynical, despite his wonderful Valentine's Day gift!

the questions i was asking earlier about the thursday night ad comm meetings were actually questions about final decisions post-interview. anyone know any info about my previous post? good luck tonight everyone!

I called last week (complete since October) and they said "we will be interviewing through April and we are continuing to invite people for interviews." And that was all they would tell me.

The Stanford committee met today ...

(Hooray! I'm in!)

Thanks! I'm so excited. 🙂 Stanford is the only place I interviewed, so it was a tremendous relief to get in. My husband has been calling me "Doctor" all night. 🙂

I interviewed on the 25th ... so the turn around time is pretty speedy.

oh! and CONGRATS by the way, english! that school is awesome 🙂

I just got a call from the dean, but he said to call the office. He is not there. Am i in?????

The dean called you and told you to call the office? that doesnt even make any sense. why didnt you just ask him if you were accepted?

I'm pretty sure he meant the dean left a phone message for him asking him to call back.

And yea, it should be acceptance! Congrats!

congrats everyone!
thursdays are getting exciting. it's my turn to wait...

raven - when did you interview? congrats!

sigh...........so i interviewed last week and didn't get a phone call... you think all hope is lost for me? i probably got rejected/waitlisted... seems like only those who hear back in one week get accepted.

Does anyone know what happens to the waitlist in June? I was checking old threads and there was a mention of a highly select pool created from the waitlist. Does anyone know anything about this? Also congratulations to everyone who was accepted. You will all make wonderful docs, every student I met there was exceptional.

i too am curious about the "hold list"

i'm assuming you have to say stanford is your first choice to have any hope of getting in from the hold list... what do you guys think?

i am not even sure if that will help. i sent them a very strong letter of interest right after my interview and am wondering if a letter of intent would be worth sending. i will send it if it might help since stanford is my #1. i just wonder if we really have any real chance at all to ever get off that waitlist.

I'll send in a letter of Intent even if the waitlist at Stanford moves very slowly, if at all. I do know that at least years ago, people at the very top of the waitlist are guaranteed a place in the class in NEXT year's class. I mean, most people will probably go elsewhere instead, but why not keep that as an option?

Yeah if Cornell and my other top choices do not work out I will probably send a new letter of intent to Stanford.

hang in there--hope is definitely not lost. i interviewed 4 weeks ago and had heard nothing...i was about to call and ask whether my waitlist/rejection letter had gotten lost in the mail! then this afternoon i got a message on my answering machine telling me to call an adcom member. i figured since it wasn't thursday that there must have been a problem with my app which was holding up the decision, but it turns out i was accepted! so, even though the norm seems to be to hear back within 1-2 weeks with a call on a thursday night, it is possible to be accepted after a longer wait, and the call can come on friday, too! best of luck to everyone out there...i'll keep my fingers crossed for all of you. 🙂

Is it safe to chalk up Stanford as a rejection if I haven't received an interview yet?
