I will be attending med school this fall. Obviously, I will need to learn how to golf. Does anyone have a recommendation for an inexpensive but decent set of clubs?

You will be pleased to know that most docs really suck at golf. Lawyers kill docs at golf. Docs just do not have the time to hone their game. When I was a first year med student, one of my country club class mates invited me to play golf at a local public course in the big city. I borrowed three clubs, a driver, an 8 iron, and a putter, and won. But I admit, I suck at golf. But, yeah, few docs are really good at golf. Not enough time.

yeah i suck currently, but i'm just beginning so we'll see. i know docs are busy, but i would think lawyers starting out would be in a similar situation. you have to put in serious time before you make partner.

My golf career consists of going out to the range to hit a few every couple weeks...i can hit one helluva curve ball though

Props for the thread. Something that's been on the back of my mind too. Too bad my golfing experience = mini-putt + a couple trips to a driving range.

Anyone who knows what they're doing - what exactly do you look for in a beginner's set of clubs and what price range should we expect?

Your best bet is to pay heed to online reviews...

If you find a set of irons for around $199 with over 4 out of 5 stars (or similar scheme), they should be alright for an early set.

This is a really good thread. I kind of don't want to learn golf, so it's good to learn that most docs suck at at.

How about tennis? I think I would much prefer that. Do docs play tennis regularly?

Hey, with all of this worry about declining prestige, salary, and respect, our generation needs to maintain a high image. This does not necessarily mean being elitist. However, we should aspire to be viewed as among societies' most respected. After all, people's ability to function in society depends on there health. If rocking the golf course can help to maintain this image, then I believe it is our duty.

Tennis is totally respectable. Not to mention, it is a great way to maintain ones body, or build one. I think tennis is a sport that can absolutely be included in the conversation.

Tennis is pretty fun. I beat my gf all the time. 😀

I've been out on the course a total of 4 times so far during first year. Definitely don't have much time to play. Why pick up something that'll stress you out even more when med school itself is stressful? 😀

Sailing looks pretty ballin' and sounds prestigious.
We should likely consider taking this up too 😀

"Dr. Captain" or "Capt. Doctor" -- therein lies the rub.

I have played golf off and on since I was young. I got my first full length set of clubs at Sports Authority for less than $200 - not a name brand set but one that felt good when I hit balls with them (most golf stores have a screened area set up where you can test out clubs). It was definitely a good set to start out with.

You'll have some basic options available when you're browsing for a set. The first is the type of shaft you want - traditionally either steel or graphite. It really comes down to feel. The second is a choice between traditional irons and hybrid clubs. If you go the traditional iron route, you'll get a 3 (or 4) through 9 iron, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and drivers (1, 3, and 5 wood). I'm biased toward irons but I know some people that really like hybrid clubs. I don't have much experience with hybrids so I won't give any advice on them.

I really enjoy golf as a sport and I'm trying to play as much as possible this summer. However, I'm probably not going to play much during medical school and residency instead opting for basketball, which I also really enjoy and is easier to work into your schedule. I'm actually curious, do many medical students play golf?

Good luck finding your set!

Hey everybody,

I am an avid golfer and play about 2 times a week in the summer (well at least until med school starts in august). Anyways, if you are just starting out, I would suggest buying a "no-name" set for ~150-200 dollars. These will do the trick and should last 1-2 seasons, until you get a little better. Here is a good example:

Other people were saying to buy Adams hybrids...etc...but these clubs are very expensive and not really needed until you get better. Unless, you have lots of money and can afford them.

Cheers,

Hellogoodbye
