I am currently at a community college and my school has ZERO resources with regards to premed advising. I am wondering if anyone has any advice about starting a premed on campus?

My community college is huge so I am sure that there is a bunch of people out there who would be interested, I just have no clue how to go about it. There is no premed advisor, nothing! It is so frustrating because I graduate soon and if it wasn't for SDN, I wouldn't have a clue about what is required when it comes to med school applications. I just don't understand why there wouldn't be anyone in place for guidance. I mean, if I didn't start researching information then I would have transferred with nothing, leaving 2 years to cram everything in (MCAT prep, volunteering, research etc.) It would just have been nice to have resources available and meet other premeds with similar interests.

The 4-yr that I am transferring to has a pre-med organization and I was thinking of contacting them for some help and guidance, maybe setting up a partnership with them. What do you think?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! 🙂

That's because it's a CC. People who graduate who are interested in medicine will go on to a 4-year college.

Is there a health career club at your school? You could probably integrate premed resources into that club.

I like this approach as it is efficient on many levels.

Meanwhile, find out what interest there is from the student body. Good luck!

Sometime people know they want to get into medicine before they start a 4 year, i'm not as lucky as some to go straight to a 4 year. A community college should have some guidance; there is no reason why they should have to wait until they are half way through their bachelors to start prepping.

No, there is no health career club. I would def have a point of contact from faculty if we did 🙁

I understand. Maybe you can start a health career club instead a of a premed club. You'd likely get a lot more interest.

For those who are part of a premed organization, what kind of things do you do/talk about?

Being from Texas, I know that my friends at UT had a good one (last time I checked it was affiliated with their bio dept and some dude that was leading it did a lot with it and was at the national conf (amsa?) i think) and I heard this one girl at Rice made theirs epic too. Maybe email some of the organizations with good ones and ask them directly for advice?

SDN = free pre-med organization + best/most information you could ever hope to want. Problem solved 😎

I'm not saying don't go out and talk to people. But IMO, the people in my undergrad's pre-med organization were not the most interesting bunch. Go join an a cappella club or start an elevator music group. Something that'll make you stand out to adcoms, but more importantly something that'll make you stand out to yourself. And yes, the previous sentence sort of makes sense.
