okay, i'm totally confused about the importance of being a state resident for a private school. i was thinking that it wouldn't really matter but just noticed that schools like comp have very few non in-state students. is that just a matter of who's applying and opting to matriculate, or are there private schools that have some incentive to accept instate people? if so, which ones are they?

i promise that i would have done a search if it was working. 🙂

why do they care? for a person like me in a state with no osteopathic school, it feels like we're getting a bum situation.

I'm in the same boat as you, there are several DO school in the east coast area, and alot of them give preference to if not from the state itself but then SAME freaking neighboring states! PCOM, I think one in NY, and the New England one is what comes to mind.

These schools form to fill a need for physicians in under-served areas and thus their missions are to train physicians in the hope of fulfilling this need. It is more likely that someone from the area that the school serves will remain in that area than for someone from far-away. This, I believe, is the logic. However, don't let that hold you back as these schools will consider applicants from all over as well. UMDNJ shows a large quantity of in-state students because most out-of-state applicants become NJ residents as per the school’s definition before the first year begins for tuition purposes. Don't hold back and apply to all schools that interest you. Good luck

Nate got it right on.

School policy. The new one in Washington state will most likely have that on their policy as well. We serve to prepare physicians to work in rural northwestern US ... blah blah. blahhh.

This may be due to pleasing local politicians and maybe even receiving some tax breaks etc... etc..

LECOM and NSUCOM are also private, but they still have lower tuition for in-state. hmmmm

Anyway.. Nate how is everything going? Are you guys starting next week or later in August. I got a new avtar.. how about you. You going to change yours. Maybe with the white coat on!!!

Excellent timing man. Looking good looking good. NJ is a great school and like I said before, if they accept Canadians I would of been applying for sure. Same as MSU.

The weather up here is great. Well actually Toronto is prob the same level or a bit higher.. slightly than NJ. We had really smoggy humid days for the last couple of weeks. You know that polution from Michigan and IL. Dam you..

Sure... road trip. BTW, I went by Montreal and Quebec 2 weeks ago it was great. I will PM you a site.

COMP specifically states that they do not give preference to CA residents. However, they do receive a high number of CA applicants (understandable). A lot of these students are from the University of California (UC) system, which is produces pretty competitive students. But in 2008, 74 out of 200 students were non-residents which is not bad. If you are a good applicant and apply early, you will have a decent shot.
