To those reapplicants that got accepted what were your stats and what did you do to improve your application? How many times did you apply?

Application 2003:
3.78gpa, 27mcat (10p/7v/10b). 3 yrs research exp, 2 yrs hospital vol. exp, some community service (tutoring, etc).

Applied to ~20 schools. 1 interview. 0 acceptance.


Application 2005:
3.83gpa, 33mcat (12p/9v/12b). Everything from Application 2003, plus EMT exp, phlebotomist (1 yr), 2 more yrs research, 1 publication, more community service.

Applied to ~40 schools. 13 interviews. 5+ acceptances. Going to UCSD 👍

Applied TWO times (first time submitted end of August-- me=stupid)

First round:
15 apps, 2 interviews, 0 acceptances

Second round:
25 apps, ~10 interviews, 3 acceptances.

Only real difference between first and second time was the fact that I did a masters/post-bac at BU (and a couple more volunteer experiences along with it). Seems to have made all of the difference. Oh, and I submitted AMCAS end of June. That was a huge improvement on my previous app as well.

hello i was wondering where you did graduate school at? and did u have to take ur GRE. i applied last may to medical schools here in texas. i was offered one interview at UTHSCSA (san antonio med school) I was not accepted. I just took my MCAT for the third time and I got a horrid score. 19P. So I decided I would not reapply this year. Instead I would reapply the following May (2006). This would mean that I would be waisting two YEARS of my LIFE!!! Have any advice as to how I can improve my GPA. what type of graduate courses I can take. any help would be nice. thanks.

1st time - for 2003 admission:
Undergrad GPA: 2.85
MCAT: 25 (9BS, 9VS, 7PS)
Applied late: began in August.
Had done some Hospital volunteer work, research on the West Nile Virus, a lot of work with Habitat for Humanity (spring break trips, work in my school's community)
Applied to about 15 schools - big fat 0 interview invites

2nd time - for 2005 admission:
Post Bac GPA: 3.85 (about 12 courses - retook orgo I&II and physics I, and took alot of upper level bios and chemistry courses along with calc I&II - wanted to show adcoms that i could handle some serious science at once so one semester i took orgo II, biochem, microbio, and calc I - it was killer, not recommended, but i still pulled it off somehow with 3 A's and a B+)
BTW, i did the post-bacc at CUNY - Hunter College, the "program" was very loose and not well organized, but if you knew what you wanted to do the science courses and profs were excellent, recommended if you are living in NYC
-retook MCAT in Aug 2004: 29 (10BS, 10VS, 9PS) - pulling up that PS was key
-applied in June, although adcoms had to wait for my MCAT scores in Oct, applying early is still important i think
-More ER volunteer work, did an Americorps VISTA program for a year at a health clinic after graduation, worked in an endocrinology lab at Hunter, worked as a writing/reading tutor as well

Results:
applied to 20 schools, two interviews, two acceptances, will be attending SUNY Upstate this fall!! 😀 😀 😍

Good luck, if i can pull myself up from those dismal undergrad GPA stats and MCAT scores, you can too!

Right, all this info is downright useless to others in your position, unless we know where you applied. Someone with a 3.4 GPA 32MCAT appled to 10 schools with no acceptances would scare the hell out of a lot of people, unless you told us you applied to all top tier schools.

Last year:
MCAT 32Q, GPA 3.2, BCPM 3.5, shadowing, volunteer, medical consulting job, applied mid-July, bad PS that included my depressing reasons for the poor grades on my transcript, no interviews or acceptances.

This year:
MCAT 32Q, GPA 3.32, BCPM 3.5, all of the above ECs, plus orthopedic/sports med research (one publication thus far, working on a new project now), public health research (publication by end of this year), vascular surgery research (publication in the next few months and more afterward), much better PS that shows off ME and not my bad points (leaving that for the special box), stronger LORs from these research positions, and applying now (mid-July), just submitted my TMDSAS and about to submit my AMCAS

The big difference this year is that I have a lot of research under my belt, a better cumulative GPA, and I spent more time on my applications, making sure they were thorough and clear. Last year, I didn't think I would fail miserably because my application wasn't as good as it could be.

Don't just reapply. Redo everything. Put effort into it. I'm praying it all works in my favor.

Only ~ 3 months volunteer work.

Second Application (2005)

MCAT: dunno yet
~ 11 applications, waiting to see.

GPA (after I finish this term): 3.32
SCGPA after this term: 3.45

Phlebotomy class, full-time work in Spring, going to work as PBT in September. Was in law enforcement but they kept pushing my hire date back, plus the training would have voided any interview offers. I'm also taking additional science courses at a CC while working towards my diploma in surgical tech.

I managed to find my mdapplicants profiles from 2003 and 2005. My biggest difference was in experience---I started volunteering and doing research---that I got a master's degree. The MCAT scores and GPA's held constant.
