Stats of Applicants to Irish schools and Acceptance, Waitlist or Rejection

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm beginning to lose hope. I still haven't heard ANYTHING from a single Irish school or ABP. I thought I had competitive stats for the Irish schools, seeing as how I got interviewed at a Canadian school (still waiting to hear back). This is so so stressful!

Hang tight, thembert. I am in the same position. Do you have a backup plan?

Edit: I was rejected from RCSI in mid-april

My backup is to do a master's in biochem which I am also still waiting to hear back on. I thought for sure that out of 7 med schools I would get in to at least one. I guess my very last resort if nothing works out is to take a year off and just improve my MCAT and ECs.

UCD GEM acceptance received today via FedEx. Dated April 30th.

Does anybody know if there is a Facebook group for the class of 2017?
Congrats!! I got my offer package from UCD on Monday (for the GEM program)...I think ABP received them on Friday. Are you going for sure? Does anyone have any advice regarding UCD for a Canadian student?

Thanks and good luck to everyone 🙂

I just received an email invitation for an online interview for RCSI-Bahrain's 6 year program! Do you guys have any advice as far as interview questions?

+1 I would like to know the same

I'm planning on doing the interview tomorrow.

Question for you: I can't seem to find any student loan options for RCSI Bahrain. I live in the US and am a citizen, but does anyone know who offers loans for there? Will you be getting any loans if you attend?

Rejected from only Canadian university I got interviewed at. Now it's all up to Ireland. Still waiting on all 6 schools of which I haven't heard anything...

Has anyone actually been rejected from Irish medical schools yet?

Yes, some people have been rejected.

Medstart, all the rejections I saw in the forum this year were from RCSI only.Did you hear of anybody who was rejected from other schools?
It is so hard to wait on RESERVE

I did contact ABP a few times but every time I do they just tell me that they will let me know ASAP when a school accepts/rejects me. Most recently they told me they don't know when next round of acceptances are either.

Pick up the phone and call the school directly. Ask for medical school admission. They might answer your questions or might tell you to talk to ABP. It is a 50/50 chance depending on who answers the phone and how you ask the questions. Good luck.

Hello everyone!
This is my first post!

Anyone knows if there will be a third round of offers at UCC, UCD, TCD, NUIG and UL?!!

I applied a little bit late! my application was completed by the end of Jan., 2013!
However, I haven't heard anything from ABP until I have emailed them today and got this reply:

"UCC has released 1st round offers, and UCD, NUIG, TCD and Limerick have released 2nd round offers. Unfortunately, you have not yet received an offer. We are unclear if there will be an additional round of offers.
RCSI has taken a final decision on your application. Unfortunately they are unable to offer you a place in the 2013 entering class. A letter has been sent to you from RCSI and a copy of that letter is attached to this email.
Final decisions (offers and regrets) will be sent by all the universities to which you have applied. It will come via mail or Fed Ex (if it's an offer) in a formal letter to the mailing address listed on your application form.
Your file remains active at UCC, UCD, NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin, and Limerick. They have yet to reach a final decision with regard to your application.
Rest assured, should your status change, we will be in contact with you."

The regret letter from RCSI was dated April10!!!!! They didn't email me that regret letter and I haven't receive anything in the mail yet!

I'm so pissed off at the ABP !! Does anyone knows when is the 2nd round at UCC?!

Thanks

Hey everyone,

I heard from a friend that called ABP that UCC might not be releasing second round offers this year, probably because they took enough people from the first round which is surprising =(

Yeah ... got the same news today regarding UCC second round from ABP!
I also got my rejection letter from UL today as well!

This is ABP reply:
"There has been no movement with University College Cork and (at this point) it is unlikely that they will be issuing a 2nd round of offers.
You file being "active" does not mean "wait-list." It simply means that the school has yet to make a decision on your application (offer, wait-list or rejection)."

Good luck to everyone & I hope I will get in somewhere!

Got a rejection letter today from University of Limerick dated May 20th 🙁
Still nothing from ABP or other 5 schools

did you have an interview?! I got rejected on May 21 without being invited to the interview ... I didn't get it by mail it was from ABP when I sent a follow up email about my application status!

I'm still waiting for UCC, UCD, TCD & NUIG ... my application status is active at those schools

Rejection from RCSI in April, nothing else.

Still waiting for some status update/decision from UCD, TCD and NUIG

Emailed ABP last week and received a reply saying that I got a rejection from RCSI and NUIG. Still in the running for MUB after the interview. They didn't say anything about my app to UCD so I guess I'll still wait on that.

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to say good luck to everyone still waiting for news. I also wanted to know if there were any others who are planning on attending UCD in the fall?

Hi EmmalineA,

I will be attending UCD's 5yr Medicine Program. Maybe I will see you there!

- MG

Rejected from NUIG as well ... dated May 21!
I received it yesterday by email from ABP ... I sent a follow up email!
my application is still active at UCC, UCD and TCD!

Can we ask for feedback?! I thought my MCAT is what giving me those rejections but NUIG Shouldn't care about my stupid MCAT!!!
They only stated the regular reason ... that due to the limited spots many qualified students will be disappointed!

Butterfly, did your NUIG rejection have an incorrect address as mine did? In the upper left corner...my street adress is correct, but it states I'm from Surrey, Canada...which is on the other side of another country lol

Yes,, same here!
The street is correct but the city and the country is Surrey, Canada as well!!

I gave up hope on those school .... it seems I'm going to Boston University HEM program and re-take my MCAT & apply in the U.S. !

Have you applied to other medical schools as a back-up (i.e. Carribean?)
Ireland was supposed to be my back up from Canadian schools haha so I guess I will just need to improve my resume and try again

Received physical rejection from NUIG today. Was sent from AB, likely due to NUIG apparently not knowing my correct address.

mail from ABP was sent today from fed ex , but I wasn't home .. so i won't be getting anything until Monday.

Acceptance from RCSI-Bahrain today. Haven't been able to secure any loans as of yet, so it doesn't look like I can afford to attend. 🙁

Not sure if it is going to be the same in Canada. In the US, it appears that the choices of medical programs, especially in the next five years, might be: a US/Canadian MD program, followed by a US DO program, and lastly an international medical program, irrespective of whether you are looking at the British, Australian, or Caribbean ones. My dad's friend is a Dean in a US Medical school and he told my dad that he suspects it would be extremely difficult to get into a US residency program in five to ten years time for an international graduate since the numbers of MD and DO programs in the US are being actively increased by 30% in the next ten years. The ACGME is going to unify the residency programs in the US. So, both DO and MD graduates from the US will be able to apply to the unified residency programs. With this in mind, I would be very worried about going to RCSI-Bahrain, irrespective of whether I get a loan or not. I would definitely choose DO programs over any international MD programs.

Not only that but if you go international and you apply to the US but aren't a US citizen you are squeezed pretty tight so you pretty much have to take a year off to apply.

Is RCSI-Bahrain fully accredited by a medical licensing agency in Bahrain?

Is the school designed to produce medical doctors for Bahrain (e.g. the RCSI in Dublin) or does it cater to off-shore students? (e.g. the Caribbean schools)

Is it recognized by the Medical Board of California?

Those are three important legitimacy checks to make before going. If it passes all three I'd say it's okay to attend there as it will just be viewed as a standard international medical school. It's unlikely that many residency programs will have heard of it, or of Bahrain in general, which could count against you but probably not all that much.

EDIT: There are English-language medical schools in places like Poland (Jagiellonian), and the Czech Republic (Charles) that have reputations in America.. and coming to America from Europe, even from Eastern Europe, will probably be viewed more favorably than coming from the Middle East.. Not that there is anything wrong with the Middle East but the American media has been at war with it for the last decade plus.

Don't go to Czech Republic, its also a big destination for British students who can't get into medical school in the UK. There was one person who went there who said on studentroom.co.uk that the facilities are really low quality and their teaching hospitals don't even have proper washing facilities, some of the washrooms are missing soap and aren't clean and they are lacking good equipment etc

Btw the reason JohnSnow is asking about the medical board of california is because they are known to be the toughest in terms of "recognization" and a lot of states other than california use MBC as their reference point for licensing although i'm pretty sure the Northeast doesn't.

Most irish grads end up in Massachusetts from all the research i've done (so far i've gone through all the IM residencies in California, NY and Massachusetts although a lot of residencies won't show their current residents and where they graduated from). The places with the largest numbers of Irish grads were in Mass and a few in NY.

Why not DO in the US? DO programs provide their graduates with the same unrestricted privilege to practice medicine as their MD colleagues in the US and Canada. It is also probably a lot easier to get into competitive residency program than if you are an international medical graduate. It is, at least for now, a lot less competitive to get in then MD programs. Comments???

Well SJLIM, speaking personally, I fear carrying a stigma at the end of my name.

There is no problem with a DO degree as long as you are happy practicing in the US or a handful of other countries. The main reason people stay away from the DO, in favor of an "international MD", is due to a desire to practice outside of the US. The DO degree is not recognized in places like Ireland and Australia.

A DO is more favorable than any international medical degree due to the fact that US grads (MD or DO) are given residency preference over ALL IMGs. So if you plan on spending your entire life in America it's a really good option for you, be happy its there, take it and run!

There is some snobbery and stigmas that might exist, but would your really want to work for or with somebody who judged you based on the letters following your name? That's like degree racism.

@OfflinePK, the number of DOs in the US is increasing and the stigma attached to DO is also fading with time. Most DOs do not practice very much Manipulation and many go into specialty training. My dad, who is an oncologist, told me that one of his colleagues is an internationally well known specialist in the treatment of kidney cancer and he is a DO. Also, one of my dad's colleagues, an MD, told my dad that he trained with some DOs during his rotation and he found that some of the DOs, especially those trained in Pennsylvania, were better than residents trained in some of the MD programs in the same state. DO is truly an option.

JohnSnow, there are now more and more countries recognizing the US DO degrees for unlimited medical practice. Please see this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Osteopathic_Medicine#International_practice_rights
