Stats of Applicants to Irish schools and Acceptance, Waitlist or Rejection

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone submitted their application for the 2018 class?
I'm applying to UCC UCD NUIG TCD RCSII and UL.

GPA: 3.43
H BMSc at UWO.
Also applied to the US.
MCAT- don't know my score yet.

Didn't think I would be saying this but I got accepted to TCD!! I got an e-mail from ABP Friday!

If an American gets in to an Irish med school, what are the odds of getting an Irish residency spot after? Could someone theoretically go to Irish med school and relocate there?

Securing a first year residency (internship is what they call it in Ireland) is not very easy for non-EU students. EU/Irish students have first priority over international students and they have a very limited number of spots for which there is a lot of competition. It is possible, but I suggest you definitely make plans for a Canadian/US residence (write USMLEs, clinicals).

Congratz!! 🙂

In a previous post you said you got a rejection letter from TCD, how did this happen?

Hey everyone,

I got accepted to TCD. I also received the email this passed Friday.

I'm not planning on taking it as I've already decided on a school in Australia.

So to anyone out there still waiting on Ireland: you might be getting an email soon.

I know!! It's crazy. I honestly don't understand how I could be rejected, then a month later be accepted...there must have been a waitlist I was on or enough students who were accepted didn't accept their offers. Either way, I'm happy with the outcome 🙂

You know what that means right? They wanted you and that's all that matters! Good job!

I'm not sure how accurate this is. Yes EU citizens get first crack at the available jobs. Unless things changed dramatically last year, it's historically been very easy for IMGs to get an intern year job as well if they wanted one. There's usually quite an excess.

Just wondering if anybody knows if there is still a chance of getting accepted this late? I have yet to hear from two schools still. And I believe the term starts as of Sept 23rd. 😕

is a 24 MCAT absolutely too low for any irish medical school? I have a 3.4ish sGPA and plenty of great ECs (clinical shadowing, volunteering at a hospital, cancer research, genetic research)...

I've already applied to every school in ireland, but I just want to know if my grades are *too low*

There were people with higher scores than you who were rejected from every school in Ireland. Ireland is still quite competitive.

Yeah but, is it TOO low by far? Like is it out of the question? I already applied, I just really need someone to tell me it's going to be ok. Hah.

I think it's out of the question.

The Irish medical school that takes applicants with the lowest MCAT score tends to be the University of Limerick. A 27 is basically their floor (based on what people on here have said), you might be able to sneak in with a 26 but that would probably be the lowest for Ireland.

The vast majority of accepted applicants have a 30+ on their MCAT, and at the very least tend to be in the 27+ bracket.

So you're saying.. because my score is two points below an unannounced minimum, that I shouldn't have even bothered applying? Ok, should I just tell them I plan on re-writing my MCAT in april? Or....

Since you already applied, you should just wait and see. If you plan on re-writing your MCAT in april you shouldn't tell them. You should only tell them if you re-wrote it and got a higher score.

Yes, if I were you I would encourage you to rewrite. Anything is possible but I think you're looking at a stack of rejections with a 24 on MCAT.

If you don't tell Atlantic Bridge that you plan to rewrite MCAT they will just have the universities consider your application with the 24 and you will likely have a few rejections in hand by the time you get your MCAT results back.

I think you give yourself the best chance if you tell Atlantic Bridge you plan to re-write MCAT, then study your tail off to get a 27+ (preferably 30+). And don't sweat the timeline, a LOT of people were not accepted until July last year so if you have your April MCAT score back by June 1 there is plenty of time for consideration.

OR you can sit a January MCAT and have the scores back by mid-February which will give you an even higher chance at admission.

Actually yeah, telling them you plan on re-writing might actually make them delay their decision until you get your scores back.

With those stats you should be able to get somewhere in Canada.

I'm unfortunately a long-shot at most Canadian schools. I might have a chance at some interviews, but my undergrad GPA is simply not competitive in Canada. Ireland is the most realistic option unless I want to go back for a second undergrad.

Why aren't you applying to the states with those stats?

A 36 MCAT will score you a lot of points with admissions, and a 3.52 GPA may be a bit low but your MCAT more than compensates for it, plus your degree is from McGill and that will be looked upon very favorably. Try to find yourself some Canadian-friendly US schools and I think you'll walk right in.

Yeah, you will definitely get in into the US and always take the US over Ireland.

That's what I thought. I told Florence that I plan on re-writing, and she asked me when but I have NO idea.

I'm a full-time student so its not like I have time to study for the mcat on top of this. I have like... 3 weeks off max before my January classes start, which most people would argue is not enough time to study.

Can someone suggest something to me? Alternatively- I could write in April but my exams span all of April... and again, how am I going to study for it while studying for my finals?

Any ideas? Is there something I'm not considering?

Oh, guys, another thing.. I can get extra time on the MCAT which is why I didn't score well the first time.

I'm guessing I can do a lot better if I have extra time. Maybe I should re-write it.

Well yeah i think you should re-write it over the holidays when you have time to study.

Thank you. Yep, I have spent the last hour looking into my exam schedule, and applying for accommodations. I need some documentation but otherwise, I might have a shot at an extra 45 minutes per hour of testing. That would be .... wonderful.

Hi everyone I have started to apply to the Atlantic Bridge program for the next school year and was just curious if there is anyone else on the same track. I am not too familiar with AB but have heard some students from the US mainly getting accepted (thats were Iam).

I'm in my 3rd year of university and have completed all of the pre-med coursework. What are the chances of being accepted to study in a medical program through the AB program, I am very curious of that..?

I would appreciate anyone's input and advice..🙂

Thanks😀

You would need an undergrad degree for the 4 year programs. Otherwise you're eligible for the 5/6 year programs. We would need to know more about your marks to tell you roughly what chances you have.

ok, well I don't have a degree yet and also have no mcat scores to boast about..Other then that I have plenty of Health experience totaling up to 5 years of experience and volunteerism. my last position I worked as a medical assistant in a top rated VA medical center.

hey guys, I'm currently applying to the Irish medical schools and I was wondering if i had a chance, also, are my chances improved by applying by the november 15th deadline.
Canadian Resident
Undergraduate: 3.5GPA (H. Bsc. Biochemistry, Minor in Psych) University of Ottawa Graduate 3.3GPA (Msc. Neuroscience) McGill University
MCAT: Verbal 11 Physics 10 Biology 10 P
EC: Founding a Science camp for under privileged students, co-author on a chapter review, VP of student association, Black belt, Invited Speakership, Poster award, Bilingual diploma from Ontario in french and english (if that counts for anything).
Anyways, thanks for reading, looking forward to hearing from you guys!

Hey there,

I was hoping to go to ireland for a 5 year program next year, just wondering what my chances are:

Overall highschool average 85%
Grade 12-
90 chem
93 bio
80 math
95 eng
91 exercise sci
86 nutr

Grade 11
92 bio
82 chem
56 math (missed a ton of class because of injury)

Extra circular

A ton.. student council prez all sorts of med related work research and working with different organizations

Im in my 3rd year of undergrad with an 79.6 average, but a 3.3 gpa (have one course that really screwed me) first year was a 3.51. I did really well in bio chem and physics like high 80s in all of them just got dusted by organic chem lol. I also have a few personal reasons why my grades aren't as high as they could be, mom was diagnosed bipolar in grade 11 and it was kinda tough to deal with but I worked around it, she's kinda my inspiration to do medicine I wanna go into psychiatry and really interested in the brain.

What are my chances with the irish schools ? Ucd, trin, rcsi, ucc

Would I be considered for the 6 year program?

If everything you're saying is accurate you appear to be a very competitive applicant. I'm a second year at UCD, which was the most competitive Irish medical school to get an offer for this year, and the North Americans in my course that I have spoken to had comparable GPAs and MCATs to you.

Irish schools are becoming more and more competitive each year and they are getting more applicants too. I would recommend you rewrite the MCAT and ask them to consider you for the 4 year programs. With a 3.45 gpa and a 30+ mcat you have a decent chance at getting in. You would also save yourself about $30,000 or more by doing a 4 year vs. 5 year program. Think about it.

Money isn't really a concern for me. The MCAT is. I've taken it twice and I know for a fact that there is no way I can get to 30. I honestly wouldnt mind a 5th year, in fact, I'd prefer it.

How were your high school grades? I believe the 5 year programs also look at those as well?

Yeah, I was accepted at SGU too. I don't know what to do. I need to re-write my mcat in january, cause I did horribly on it (24). I applied to US schools too but Im assuming i'll be getting a stack of rejections soon.
