Stats of Applicants to Irish schools and Acceptance, Waitlist or Rejection

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That would be awsome if we found out on the 19th.. I have an interview with my local med school on the 24th so it would take a lot of pressure off if I find out about Ireland first.

I heard that Ireland can extend offers up to a month before class starts? Does that mean that if I recieve a rejection they may send an offer later? Is there a waitlist? or will they withold rejection leters until the end? Thanks

Just got my acceptance to RCSI GEP 😀 Soooo happy right now

If you receive a rejection that means you are no longer able to receive an offer from that school. If you don't receive a rejection then it is true that you can receive an acceptance late into the summer. So keep your hopes up as long as you haven't been rejected! 🙂

Got a fedex acceptance to UCD GEP. Now I have to decide between UCD and RCSI...

Where are you located?

I got into RCSI also and am waiting to hear from UCD and trinity. Hopefully I will get something soon.

I live in California. Maybe I'm the closest to the AB office or something, although I did get my RCSI letter a few days later than most. Good luck to you!

my app was completed really late at the end of january. i havent heard back anything from the schools i applied to. Will they inform you if you've been rejected? Has anyone been rejected yet? Or is it a silent rejection?

My First Choice is: RCSI GEP! I will most likely be there in Sept!

Have any west coasters heard today? Specifically 5 year?

So are the UCD first offers coming out these next few weeks? I'm assuming I didn't get into RCSI cause I didn't hear anything or got an interview...

Acceptance just came for 5 year Rcsi. I'm in Saskatchewan. Deposit is due on the 5th

I just received acceptance letters via FEDEX today for both UCD and RCSI's six-year program. I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and had my interview in Vancouver.

Good luck to everyone waiting!

I also got a acceptance letter from UCD today for the GEP. I have been accepted to both RCSI and UCD GEP!

Has anyone received an acceptance to both UCC and UCD?
I currently have a UCC acceptance but have not paid the deposit yet. Really want to go to UCD over UCC but worried that the fact I already have a UCC acceptance will prevent me from getting one from UCD.🙁

I also had a late application. My application was complete December 14th (all GEP programs), not quite as late as yours. I did not get first round interview at RCSI and rumor has it due to the large number of applicants there may not be a second round. I did however get first round acceptance to UCC on the first day they came out. So your late application will hinder you for RCSI, but it should probably be ok for the other schools.

I am in a similar position. I got a UCC acceptance but was hoping possibly for UCD however I paid the deposit today. My preference for UCD over UCC wasn't very strong but more of a curiosity. The deadline is pretty soon so don't cut it too short.....

Yeah definitely. I've given myself until Thursday to wait for UCD, then I will go ahead and pay it. Thanks

Thanks so much sasmadrid! I have been so anxious to see when Trinity will be sending out their offers. I wonder when NUIG will be sending out their offers too!!

maybe this is a stupid question, but is it okay to email the admission offices of the schools directly? or are applicants expected to direct all application questions to ABP? would it hurt an applicants chances to contact the school directly regarding the status of their application as well as conveying an interest to attend the school?

thanks

I would contact ABP, they would know the status of your app, and they are basically your contacts 😛. I'm not sure it would hurt or help to contact the school directly, but if it were me I would just ask ABP. They're very nice and helpful.

Congrats on all the acceptances! For those of you who received acceptances from UCD, when is your deadline to accept the offer?

Deadline is April 4th, so we have about 12 more days to decide and give them a 4500 euro deposit.

My mom just emailed me to tell me there's a FedEx waiting from ABP at home... I had it sent there because I was changing addresses this winter. I applied to Trinity and Galway, both 5 yr programs, so I'm not sure which one it's from or if it's even safe to assume it's an acceptance, but I assume they'd only FedEx good news? Also I can't seem to find a bill for the FedEx in my bank statements, so who knows. Anyway, I'll update once she opens it but wanted to mention it for all the other people waiting from those 2 programs.

Is there anyone here who'd be paying for this completely on their own (through loans), like me? 31k a year + 16k a year living expenses = 47k a year; 47k a year x 5 yrs = 235000 k euros, which is over $300,000 USD. If you plug that into one of those loan calculator things (http://www.finaid.org/calculators/scripts/loanpayments.cgi), you wind up paying $114,000 in interest over 10 years of paying $3500 a month. They don't recommend you take out this loan unless your annual salary is over $415k. Then you add whatever undergrad debt you have (50k in my case) and it seems even more insane.

I guess my question is, would it be insane for me to do this, particularly when I should be able to get into a good (and probably much cheaper) US med school? My main reason for applying to Ireland is that I want to start this fall (instead of in 2014, which is what will happen if I have to finish the postbac I'm in, take the MCAT, and apply) - I'm 26 already and am dying to move past all the irrelevant physics and other hoops and start on the actual medicine. I'm also very drawn to the way people describe their experiences at Trinity and Galway, and I love Ireland and have some close friends who live there and the UK, which would help a lot too. I lived in Germany for 2 years fairly recently and would like to move back to Europe if I could. But, the money-side of this seems crazy. Any advice? Sorry this is so long!

I am applying to trinity and Galway too, I am not taking any loans aor lines of credit. My physician grandfather is paying off everything, and my parents paied my undergrad (around 80 thousands). I am not sure if you want to have that much debt when you graduate at the age of 31. Have you tried carrbean medical schools? Like Saba, they are a lot cheaper.

Thanks for responding. If I went to UMass that would be a lot more reasonable (under 9k a year), and I should be able to get in there if I continue doing well in this postbac. The main draw for Ireland is being able to start in 6 months instead of 2.5 years (which is how long it would take for me to start in the States, and I'm assuming Caribbean schools too). I think your advice is pretty sound - probably way too much debt for me to take on. Frustrating!

In your situation with hefty debt already it may be best to wait for an American medical school if you aren't comfortable accumulating more debt. This assumes your stats are competitive and you would do well on the MCAT of course.

However, just food for thought, calculate how much the extra year of Postbacc + living expenses would cost you, plus writing MCAT and prep courses/material, plus applying for the American schools, plus the american med schools and 4 years of living expenses would cost. Although maybe still less, I'd imagine if you compare the sum costs of the two, the difference isn't as great as you think.

Edit: Note, calculate these costs for multiple schools, first choice and back-ups as tuition will vary widely.
