USMLE STEP 3 Trick Works!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pass 221. Relieved to say the least. This past year was super hard with multiple deaths in my family and a cancer diagnosis in family leading to multiple date changes. All I can say is, it’s hard to do it in residency but consistent effort is key. Need nerves for the exam and the process gets a little easier with coordinated effort. Good luck to all and congrats for results.

Anyone waiting for results tomorrow? My permit link disappeared this weekend, and fsmb changed from approved to expired.
Yep! Tested September 5th and 6th. Permit disappeared Monday morning. FSMB expired Tuesday morning, no link, still within testing window. Hopefully we get good news in 10.5 hours! Been losing sleep over this dumb test.

I also took mine Sept. 5 and 6, and am also within testing window without a link to reapply. Lets hope for the best! Good luck!

I took my exam on Sept 6 and 13th. My eligibility period ends 9/30 which is today. My permit link on the candidate website disappeared this morning but FSMB status still shows approved. I am hoping I get my results this week. Anyone on the same boat?

hi took exam 9/5 and 9/9 permit disappeared this am.

If going by what people mentioned on these forums. We should expect the FSMB status change to expired tomorrow morning. When does your eligibility end? My status still shows approved with no option to reapply. But the trick is that it changes to expired and no yellow box to reapply. inshaAllah I hope I get a passing score and receive my scores this Wed midnight 12 am so I can submit my ERAS app.

If our permit link is still there, but I clicked on it and it said "no longer available", does that still count as a positive?

Pass 196. USMLE can no longer steal money from me.
With being so close can you expand on your experience of the test, how you felt, how often you felt like you guessed, the ccs experience and what your prep was going in: resources, year in training, field, etc.....

Not to single you out, but it would make a lot of people feel better about being so close to the edge and getting your perspective of how the process was.

Congrats too!

The permit link should completely disappear if you are expecting the scores this Wednesday, along with FSMB expired status change. I got similar message as you did until last night but this morning the permit link completely disappeared. When did you take your exam?

No worries, I'm happy to explain a bit. Anyone can feel free to send me a DM if they want to discuss things in a more private manner.

USIMG
Step 1: 200 (first pass)
Step 2 CK: (211; on third attempt. Dealing with personal stuff and should have waited but didn't because I was an idiot)
Step 2 CS: Pass (first attempt)
Step 3: 196 (first attempt)
Had 2 LOA during medical school (both related to money because I was paying cash)

*I know my scores suck and will be an uphill battle but I believe a program director will see my life experience and other academic achievements and say, "we need that dude in our program."

Resources used: DIT Step 3 (I didn't buy it; someone hooked me up), Step 2 CK notes. and uworld (assessments, ccs cases, and q-bank). I only had about a 2-2.5 month to study.

I am currently NOT in residency and took the exam beforehand because I don't want to deal with it then. I am a USIMG and graduated Nov 2017 (debated to continue with medicine or use my other masters degrees to get rich because my overall scores suck; I chose medicine). I will add that I have a problem with standardized test (I get super nervous, my throat closes, and have a difficult time breathing) but for some reason I'm straight with regular exams and tend to dominate those.

My experience/thought about the test was that it was SUPER weird in terms of the question(s) asked. They had a lot of Step 1 material (mechanisms of drugs, having to choose the specific bug based off description such as gram + cocco-bacilli, etc) and some off the wall stuff. In addition, there were a good amount of concepts that no matter how much you studied or prepared, there just was no way of narrowing down based off the answer options (most were A-E). On day 1 I felt that I was guessing about 50-60%; could be a little higher. The question stems were long, somewhat similar to uworld, but they went out of their way to be SUPER vague. It could have just been my test form but from other people I spoke to testing on the same day felt the same. I don't have an intern year yet but I am sure that if I did I could have possibly got some of the weird questions right. I went into the test just wanting to pass (196) because I wasn't trying to destroy it; I was so fed up of studying and "running on the AMA hamster wheel" that I felt a pass would suffice. PLEASE STUDY A SHYT-TON of biostats; it was HEAVY and I had at least 5-9 questions on EVERY block. I also had 1-2 abstracts that were just impossible to do just because of the amount of text to read, decipher, and formulate a theory in order to pick the correct answer option.

On the second day I had ZERO biostats, however, the questions were still challenging but more manageable. Most people would agree with my assessment because that has been their experience as well. Had a friend just take it and they confirmed that their second day was just like mine in terms of experience. Now, as far as the CCS cases, I cannot stress enough to read the 41 non-interactive cases on uworld BEFORE doing the regular 51 cases. The reason I say this is because you can become familiar with things and understand what needs to be ordered and when to order it. You have to remember, you are now considered the top dog (at least on the exam) and have to think like a clinician so your orders have to be calculated. Half of the battle is getting accustomed with the software program and knowing the names of drugs (generic or name brand) and types of procedures along with consults that may or may not be needed.

Dude - many thanks! Great write up!!! This is sure to help a lot of people.

I took it 9/13 and 9/14.

I took it 9/13 and 9/14.

You most likely will get your scores on Oct 9th (4th wed instead of 3rd). From what I know Sat-Tue (4th Wed), Wed-Friday (3rd Wed). Usually, this has been the case, but there may be a slim chance you might this Wed but very unlikely. Friday is the cut off for the score release. If your permit does disappear and FSMB status doesn't change before noon tmr, then most likely it will be next week for you. I am hoping my FSMB status changes, usually it does the day after permit link itself disappears (you won't be able to print the permit regardless once you have taken your exam, so you cant base it on that). Wait it out till noon tomorrow.

update: This morning my FSMB status changed to Expired with no link to reapply. Fingers crossed
yeah mines still is "approved" and says in the gray box "Your Step 3 application will expire soon. If you are unable to take the exam during your initial eligibility period, you may qualify for a one-time only extension. To request an eligibility extension, click the “Apply for Eligiblity Extension” link on the physician portal". No yellow tab or box at the bottom.

Mine too! Between thin and the match the anxiety is killing me :doctor:

Hopefully, we can all update our exam success story later tonite. 12 more hrs to go. At least, I am somewhat less nervous to see that FSMB site does not have the reapply link. I was so scared to open that link this morning haha. When did you take your exam?

I'm more scared now, second-guessing if the trick works or not 😆. I took mine 09/09 and 09/10, you?

I took mine on 9/6 and 9/13. CCS cases were easier than what I expected. But mcq day 1 esp drug ads/abstracts I didnt have time to answer all of them well. Some of them I had to guess due to time but the stand-alone biostat questions were fine. Ethics, for the most part, was manageable but there were few wtf questions where every answer choices sounded right. The first day I felt 50% of the question were easy, but the remaining 50% I had to make an educated guess as there were always two good answer options.

day 2 mcq was still challenging but easier compared to day 1.

Coming out of the exam both days, I missed some easy questions that I knew the concepts cold but due to stress I ended up making silly mistakes. Overall I felt it was a hard exam with vague questions. I had a feeling that I should have at least passed but not sure about the score. Just hoping it's decent enough since I will be applying to this match cycle.

Hi everybody I am waiting my score next week and it’s my second attempt so I am sooooo nervous
I did not understand my score report because all the yellow boxes were on same so Idk where I was wicker
Please can somebody share a report just to understand

I had a similar experience. I think I did ok on CCS, I finished most cases early and only felt bad about two of them. The MCQ is what killed me, I agree that everything was very vague. I came out of the exam feeling like I had failed, I had a hard time getting through the questions and I was betting myself up after I noticed I got something wrong. I guess we’ll see tonight if this is over for us. Good luck . I’m also applying this cycle, what are you applying for?

Hey, I think is good if you check the USMLE explanation about score report, it used to be different so it’s best to go there. Good luck this time

I am applying for neurosurgery fellowship

Guys i passed 🙂 203! Second attempt so i am pumped

Btw, the TRICK DOES NOT WORK! Last time i failed, and the process you all talk about on this forum, happened to me and the yellow link appeared only after my score report was released (12 AM) - and no, my eligibility had not expired.
