Hi all!

I know there's a lot of stethoscope discussion, but I can't find this info here, or anywhere else on the entire Internet for that matter!!!

Question:
I'm getting a Littman Cardio III to replace my stolen steth this week. I'll get it from Allheart ($125!) and I think I'll get the laser engraving on the tube.
Has anyone got this engraving (from this store or anyone else)? Can the comment on how it looks, durability, if it looks "cheep" etc?
Even if people have seen them on the wards, would you please comment as above?

Thanks - all comments appreciated!

I didn't care what it looks like, only that it'll be harder to steal. You can have it done different ways, though, doesn't have to be prominent on the tube. Sorry can't post a pic, my camera isn't very good.

You can tape over it, I'm sure. If someone is determined to steal a scope, they won't care about engraving, name plates, etc. Just keep it around your neck or under lock and key when you are not using it and it won't walk off.

OK, we know people can cut nametags and cover engraving, but a prominant "perminant" name may stop someone long enough to relize that their chance of getting cought is too great. Who wants to carry a stollen steth with someone else's name, even if it's covered? The risk is too great.

But anyway, Tic (and anyone else), would you please comment on durability and looks? Thanks.

Pictures can be seen at the Allheart webpage, and others, but of course they will be taken to cast teh "best light" on the product.

A couple of docs I've worked with had their Cardio IIIs engraved on the tubing and it looked basically just like on the AllHeart site.

All a nurse has to do is cover up the tubing with one of those socks. Then nobody will know what is on the tubing.
It won't make any difference in the long run. Just like locking your doors only keeps the honest people out, and the club only keeps people from stealing your car unless it is the only one out there.

I got my master cardio steth laser engraved with my name on it. It has my name in big bold black letters.

best part about engraving is that it makes it easy to tell which side is the front.

Can anyone comment on how deep in to the tubing this goes? I happen to work at a trophy store and someone wants theirs engraved. I have no idea how to do it, but I promised to try.
Does anyone have it done on a non-littmann?

I have the Cardio III from Allheart with the engraving. I personally feel that it was a great investment. The engraving does look almost exactly like it does on the site, the lettering is fairly prominant when you get it (it's "gold" colored and stands out well against dark tubing), but will fade a bit with time. It remains, however, distinct. I've had mine for nearly five years now, and you can still clearly see the lettering, and I'm REALLY hard on my steth! It is engraved deep enough into the tubing that it would be really obvious if someone tried to "rub it out." Yes, it could be covered with a sock or something, but I've accidentilly left mine on the ambulance a number of times and it always stays put! For the few extra $$, it certainly doesn't hurt! I say go for it!

Nate.

I've seen the engraving on the tubing and it looks pretty nice but the reality is, in addition to what's been said above, the Littmann ID tag would completely cover over the engraving and look like it wasn't even there. Like TMP-SMX, I got the chestpiece of my scope engraved and it looks great (and would be much harder to cover up).

I wonder, who are the people that steal in hospitals?

Me-thinks that these guys/gals are rich and should donate some of those engraving fees to the dizzle69 med school fund. Every little amount helps. He would definitely appreciate it. Only kidding, folks.

My girl got me a Cardio III with my name engraved on the tubing when I figured out where I was going to school. I think it looks nice and it doesn't look cheap at all. To be honest, you wont want to leave it lying around anyway! You should always have it handy and at your side on the wards at all times, so there's no excuse to lose it or get it stolen anyway. Maybe I think this because mine has sentimental value, so I dont leave it around anywhere...it is quite nice to have though!

Generally, I'm the same way but when an attending or resident asks to use your scope, what are you going to say, no?

You make a good point. I have not had to cross that path yet and hope I never have to...cause if someone lost that scope of mine, I'd be failing a course after what I'd do! :scared:

Actually, I've been lucky. Everyone's who's borrowed my scope has returned it all cleaned up and everything. I've heard stories, though.

Just curious...is it a bit too much to engrave YOUR NAME, M.D. into your steth? Or do most people just put their name?

If you do it on the chestpiece of the scope, it'll be small and reasonably unobtrusive so you might just get away with it. If you'd get the engraving on the tubing you're just asking for some well deserved grief.

I'll just assume anyone who taped something onto a steth or covered parts of it with something stole it.

engraving sounds like a good idea...my PI just bought me a Cardio III so i'd be really sad if something happened to it

I like engraving...just so I know who I stole it from. 🙂
