Sooooo Christmas is fast approaching, and my parents keep asking me what I want. All I can think of that I really need is a stethoscope now that I've been accepted into school.

Before everyone goes pointing me to other threads that discuss the pros and cons of different models, that's not what my question is- I've already decided to go with a Littmann Cardio III if my school allows, so please refrain.

I'm wondering if there are any schools (Tufts, Oregon State, Purdue, Edinburgh, St. George's, Michigan State, Virginia-Maryland) that have a REQUIRED model/brand of stethoscope? One that you have to buy even if you already have a perfectly acceptable stethoscope?

If there are any current students who can speak from experience that would be absolutely fantastic!
Thanks in advance!

I don't remember what school it is but someone was talking about needing to pick out a color because the school was getting one for them.

One thing to keep in mind is that depending on the school you may not need a stethoscope your first year. Asking for a book like Dyce or Miller's might be a better gift for first year and go for the stethoscope next year. I got a stethoscope and brought it with me and it's been in the closet the entire time and it doesn't look like we'll need one at all this year.

I agree that you most likely won't need a stethoscope in your first year, but you still might want one because it's kind of symbolic, and will last you longer and ultimately be more useful than a first year anatomy text. However, financially and practically, that anatomy text might be more valuable to you in the coming year. (If you are buying an anatomy text, don't buy Dyce unless it's required......horribly useless book for most things, IMO).

I have a Littmann Cardiology III scope that I've been very happy with for almost a dozen years - it's a good investment.

I am pretty sure that Oregon provides a stethoscope.

I was gifted a stethoscope from TVMA when I got into TAMU. But I'm not sure if they're gonna do that for the incoming class next year.

Another perspective here for anyone looking towards Cornell in their future (with other pertinent advice):

We use our stethoscopes starting the first week here in our clinical skills block. It isn't a hard requirement that you have a stethoscope day 1 (they have some cheapy ones to borrow) but the expectation is that you will try a few out and make a purchase. I own the Littmann Cardio III and it has excellent sound quality and a reversible diaphragm. Many of my classmates have the single diaphragm Littmann (Master Classic?) and similarly enjoy it.

Cornell has an entire library full of core resource books for our use (we save $$$ not buying everything) so see if your school has something like that. I would advise against buying an anatomy book just yet as among the most popular ones (Dyce/Sack/Wensing, Miller's Anatomy of the Dog, Miller's Dissection of the Dog, etc) everybody discovers their favorite after some use. I happen to think Dyce is a pretty good book, Big Miller is the definitive reference, and Little Miller is the "pocket" reference you can carry around with you or to lab (it's the only vet book I purchased).

My $.02

SGU includes a Littmann Classic II (black) with the 1st term supplies package. You do use it that 1st term in Clinical orientation with your labs on the farm and in the clinic. (you don't have to use the one they purchase for you, but you will be charged for it)

VMRCVM has stated on their "supplies" list that students are required to have a Littmann classic, master classic, or cardio. i think a few of the classes have been gifted scopes during white coat, but not 100% sure there, and I dont think it was consecutive years. you don't need it till year 2 leading me to believe that you don't use it until then.

Not on the OP's list, but Penn does require a Littman (or at least they did in the past). And you do need it first year to practice PEs in ICVM.

Wish they gave them to us to free, but that is certainly not Penn's style, and not practical in the current economic environment.

Penn still requires a Littmann stethoscope and gives a list of a few different types that you're allowed to get.

We were gifted Littman Classic this year from the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, which was unexpected and awesome. I believe this is common practice at the white coat ceremony.
While we don't need it for classes, at least in the first semester, I have used mine already. If you take advantage of all of the awesome wetlabs and opportunities that the various clubs have to offer (Saturday am cow palpations, on call for PMM ride along, ICU shadowing for example), you are required to have a stethoscope.
