Hi, I really need information about the following questions. I have only just started considering Pharmacy as a career option so any answers to the following are appreciated!

1)Can anyone please tell me if any stipend is offered for the PharmD during the 4-yr studies (not post-graduation, but during the actual study-period) or is the tuition paid by the student?? If so, which univs/colleges offer it??

2) and what are the options of a pharmacy-relevant on-campus jobs, i mean, is there anything equivalent to TAship in Pharmacy schools??

Thanks!

Welcome to the SDN

1) There are no pharmacy schools that offer stipends. All schools make you pay a tuition.

2) I don't start pharmacy school until this monday so I don't know if there are TAs or any type of on campus job. However once you start pharmacy school you'll get an intern license and could try to pick up work in the surrounding area.

A good source of information is to read the FAQ

I don't think it will answer any of these questions but it may answer future questions that you might have.

My school used to offer science grads full tuition coverage if they TA'd 2-3 chem labs / week (~12-18 hours + 1-2 hours meetings / week). I never did ask if this applied to PharmD as well though since I never saw a pharm grad work as a TA there. Its really hard to say because most campuses are hushhush about it.

Yeah, your stipend is called a loan.

Welcome to Pharmacy.

No you're wrong.

Wachovia totally gave me a $30,000 stipend just the other day. The only catch was they said I have to pay it back at an interest rate of 6.8% annually. You stand corrected.

Oh you corrected him alright!

If you want a stipend while going to school, be a teacher, they're getting outrageous scholarships.

So, instead of asking questions about the field itself (you know, since you are considering spending the next several decades entrenched in it), your primary concern is the money. GTFO.

Well really, if she just wants to have a steady flow of income during pharmacy school and is not adverse to the idea of serving in the military after she graduates, why not just apply for the Air Force HPSP scholarship or something( they have the lowest PT standards.)

Just a thought.

Only a few schools give stipends. In fact, my school is paying me to go to here. It's great. 😕

if you're lucky enough to get a scholarship from your school, then your costs might be covered during one of your years in pharmacy school.

^Man that sucks. But yeah I was about to add for the OP, the military offers a stipend and tuition for your last one-two years, but you have to apply for the very competitive HPSP and serve after you graduate.

Although, with BAH, FLPP, FSA, HazPay, Jump Status and tax-free earnings while deployed, you can really rack it up if you don't indulge in $9 Whoppers!

I didn't know you could receive hazard pay as a pharmacist even though you are deployed? I thought that they would just put you in a green zone and that would be it. MDs, dentists, etc. are eligible if they are in the field practicing, right? Also, wouldn't Jump Status for pharmacists not count since you're not in a combat environment? (Maybe I need to ask a recruiter on some of these.)

Oh, I wasn't putting that into context of pharmacy, just what I received when I was deployed. To be honest, I never even knew a pharmacist when I was deployed. Although I will say this: There is no such thing as a "no fire zone" in OIF or OEF. Even on the airbase in Balad, we received mortars constantly, and some support people were injured. I BELIEVE hazardous duty pay is awarded to anyone and everyone who steps foot into Iraq or Afghanistan. I was always attached to a combat unit (1st Cav, hoooaaaah) as an interpreter, so my only experience is with BoG grunts, and thus I've got no idea. But, even BAH bitches (as we called them) got some indirect contact now and again, and I certainly consider it to be hazardous.

I really have no idea about health care professionals in the military. When I was in and doing my thing, I still had my sights set on a completely different kind of schooling, so it never got onto my radar, so to speak. Certainly ask a recruiter, not that I trust any of them as far as I could throw 'em, and also I highly, highly suggest navigating to Military.com and getting registered on their forum there. It helped me a LOT when I was DEP'ing in and getting ready to go.

I don't believe health care MOS are eligible for airborne or air assault. I'm curious though, so when you get your answers please let me know.

As in a teacher from K-12, and probably college as well.

No, you wish. While I was in dental school, I ask if you get any "stipends" or loan forgiveness if you end up teaching dental school when you graduate and they told me NO. 🙄

pharmacy schools don't give any stipends. the best you can get is a small merit scholarship if your PCAT or GPA is high. I got a 5000 scholarship, which covers 1/4 of the tuition. 🙄 Thats the best you can do in pharmacy school.

Thats why anyone would be a fool to not attend a public school. Unless you miss the deadline and couldn't apply like myself. 😳

Non-Air Crewmembers:
Servicemembers that perform flying duty as non-crewmembers, parachute jumping, demolition of explosives, handle toxic fuels, engage in flight deck duty or experimental stress duty, and so on earn $150 per month. There is one exception to the $150 per month for parachute jumping, is the authority to bestow $225 per month for HALO jumps.
Servicemembers that meet the requirements for more than one type of hazardous duty pay during the same period are entitled to receive a maximum of two types of hazardous duty pay. This presumes that the individual in question was assigned to a unit whose mission involves the performance of both types of hazardous duties.
Air Crewmembers:
Servicemembers that perform flight duties as aircrewmembers and meet their services operational requirements are eligible for a form of Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay - more commonly known as flight pay. The following table reflects the current level of HDIP for each paygrade.
Hazardous Duty (Crew Member Non-AWAC)
Pay Grade Amount Pay Grade Amount Pay Grade Amount O-10 150.00 O-2 150.00 E-8 240.00 O-9 150.00 O-1 150.00 E-7 240.00 O-8 150.00 W-5 250.00 E-6 215.00 O-7 150.00 W-4 250.00 E-5 190.00 O-6 250.00 W-3 175.00 E-4 165.00 O-5 250.00 W-2 150.00 E-3 150.00 O-4 225.00 W-1 150.00 E-2 150.00 O-3 175.00 E-9 240.00 E-1 150.00

So I guess that's a no-go. But the perks listed for pharmacy officers in another thread are awesome.(Residencies and fellowships section I think?)
